I have a 95 12v that I am going to use for a swap. It burns oil pretty bad but otherwise runs and still has good oil pressure. The previous owner said he had a guy look at it and that it had a bad cylinder. He was quoted 2K to fix it. I haven't pulled the head yet. I think at least some new rings and or a new piston. Check the cylinder and hopefully it isn't bad. If it is can I get it sleeved or can I bore that cylinder only to get it back in shape? I am new to diesels and am wondering what all would be involved and how much different it would be than a gas engine.

You can bore 1 hole and put in a 1/2 mm piston as long as you use Cummins parts as the oversize pistons are the same weight as the std. they are offered in 1/2 and 1mm over

as long as you have the engine out and are going to take it apart you should get the whole engine rebored. the shop bill would be about 1000$ plus some new rings and you would have a brand new engine.

Thanks for the info, I just recieved my service manual and am going to start taking a good look into how bad bad it is. The engine only has 217,000 so I am hoping it isn't that bad. I can then see which will be the best route. I figure getting the cylinder(s) bored would probably be the best recourse since I will have to tear it down anyway.
