Cummins Big Cam III

Will i need stronger front axle?

JUST THOUGHT THAT I WOULD DROP A NOTE TO LET YOUGUYS KNOW WHAT SOME OF US IN THE OTHER WORLDS ARE DOING.

WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF TRANS PLANTING A 96 12V INTO A 96GMC 3500HD. BOY O BOY THE FUN WE HAVE HAD. LET ME CLARIFY ON THING BEFORE I GET DOGed UPON. I LIKE DODGES, I LIKE A TRUCK THAT MAKES MONEY, BUT FOR SOME REASON DODGE DOES NOT LIKE RATING THIER TRUCK GVWS HIGH ENOUGH TO USE IN THE TOWING INDUSTRY. (WRECKERS) SO YOU HAVE TO USE WHATS AVALIBLE. NOW WITH THAT SAID ... . ONWARD

96 12V , W/ALLISON AUTO, INTO A 96 GMC3500HD. LOOKED AT THIS FOR A YEAR BEFORE STARTING IT. NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A PROBLEM, LOTS OF GOOD INFO REVEIWED HERE AT TDR. VERY IMPORTANT INFO..... IF YOU USE A ALLISON TRANY YOU WILL USE A BODY LIFT KIT 2" MIN. AND ANOTHER WILD TRICK IS THE EXSHAUST PIPE. THAT TAKES SOME RETROFITTING.

HAVE SEVERAL PITCURES TO SHOW AS WE GET FUTHER ALONG. ANY THOUGHTS FROM YOU, IM ALL EARS AT THIS POINT.

Sounds like the conversion I was too lazy to do. The city has a couple of K3500 HDs that crew cabs that I would love to have, just add a pickup bed and a Cummins. 4 doors, 19. 5s, straight axle...

I keep thinking about building a '91 3500 crew cab with a Cummins too. Maybe someday.

Pete

Good luck on conversion. I am ordering a rough country lift kit today to begin my own GM conversion. Did you need the body lift for the transmission or the engine. I am going to use 12 v and dodge auto transmission. Someone once commented that he had to use the GM transfer case instead of the dodge transfer case, didnt say why. Is yours 4x4? Would love to hear updates and see pics.

We had to use the body lift for several reasons that we did not think of at first. To get past the trans. hitting where the floorboard and the firewall meet, (could have trimmed the body seam at that point, but felt it was better to give more air around the trans) Lift kit was also used for the fact that we needed just that much room to get the p. t. o. clearance, and another was the trans cooling lines that come out of the TOP of the allison.

Do make note there are several diffrent transmissions that could be used. I think a cummins has been used in front of every type transmission (?) from all the diffrent manufactors. We chose not to use the gm trans. because of the p. t. o. situation and being computer controlled. Though i am aware that it will, and does work nicely. Besides i got a very, very, very, good deal on the pair mated together. Do take a strong look at bringing the tourqe converter into the correct stall range. BIG DIFfERANCE here.

Been worried about the aftercooler, (no room to mount it, not good ones any way) i have decided to go with a daul stage water injection at this point. Seen some good results on read ups. Any comments? / Have i missed a thread about water injection somewhere else?

Hey, glad you joined the fun!!!

I'd like to point out that on the internet, typing in all caps is usually considered the equivalent of shouting. If you can, using the normal capitalization would be helpful in reading your posts.

Anyway, your project sounds interesting, and if you need assistance getting those pictures posted, let me know, I can help you out.

BEEN ON THE NET FOR FIVE YRS AND DID NOT KNOW THE THING ABOUT ALL CAP LETTERS. BUT WHEN I AM TALKING ABOUT THE MIGHTY CUMMINS CONVERTING MY CHEVY TO A SUPER BURBAN. WELL, SOMETIMES MY EMOTIONS JUST GET THE BEST OF ME.

Hey nate snake i am also doing the conversion on my 95 dually burb. I loved my 6. 5 but i dont want to rebuild it so it will go south again. Gotta have that cummins power... I would appreciate anything or info you have on the conversion. will start mine in a couple of months but first have to find a good 5. 9 engine.

Thomas:)

I would also like any help available to put a 12 Valve Cummins in my GM. I have seen one before, not very nice, but got me thinking.
