I have a friend with a 96 3500 4x4. His auto trany shifts from 2nd to 3rd, stays in 3rd for only a second and then to overdrive. When pulling a load it goes from overdrive to second. When he uses the manual lock out button to put it into 3rd from overdrime it goes directly to 2nd gear. Dealer says nothing they can do. My dad has a 93 that there was a sensor that would go out and cause similer things. Can anyone help?

Thanks Kent

kent... . i would have him check (1) fluid level, (2) trans temp sensor, (3) tps..... sounds like the tps might be the problem... you can take it off and clean it with cleaner and usually that will do the job... . if it is a bad tps and needs to be replaced, then check with cummins over in greensboro for the better price over the dealer... . hope this is helpful...

Kent,

You need to do the things Dustoff suggested first. Also check out the kick down cable adjustment and see of the filter is plugged up. Is the pan full of scrap? No way we can troubleshoot the thing without our paws on it. So first things first. If those things check out then you need to do pressure tests. For that you will need a service manual and some pressure gauges. If you don't have the tools you will have to take it to a professional. How many miles? Drive like an old lady or like he stole it? It may just be tired and needs an overhaul.

This person Drives it moderatly hard. He told me that it has been doing it since it was new. I will check these things next week. Thanks for the replys. Sounds like it may be over my head if I have to check line pressure. I think he has had it serviced on a regulare basis. It has under 100 K.
