Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) TCC hunting

I just made a deal on a 2WD 1999 Quad Short Bed with 75000 miles. I've looked high and low locally for a year and finally had to settle buying out of state... . mainly cause I wanted a 5 speed short bed 2WD... no exceptions. Anyway, when the transit semi hauls it to my front door and drops it off, what are the first things I should start looking for in terms of the Cummins engine. Any items come to mind from anyone that could be fatal. I figure if the previous owner made it to 75000 without incident, it should be OK. Are there any "KDP" type things. I'm thinking fuel delivery should be looked at. Would it be worth it to pay Schied Diesel (for example) to do a through "once over"? I'm a good mechanic but the 24V is new to me.

PS: The previous owner did not tow anything with it.

Test Lift pump pressure...

I would test the lift pump pressures... this is by far the biggest problem with these 24 valves. Change the oil and filters so you know where you are.

Enjoy!!:D:D

Congrats

Congratulations on the new truck. I hope you like yours as much as we like ours.

What color/ options do you have?

I would...

Clean ,(polish where necessary), and lube the front Disc brake parts.

Check that track bar frame end for play.

Check the steering box for play at the shaft.

Check the rear axle wheel bearings for play. (you have to remove the axles to be able to do this. ) There have been a lot of failed Rear wheel seals because of this.

Unless you know of his maintenance schedule... I would change ALL of the fluids... given the truck has 75,000 mi.

Get the Geno's "cab Fresh Filter" to avoid the trials of changing out an air conditioning evaparator.

Thanks everyone... .

It's a 1999 2500 Quad Cab short bed 2WD 5spd. It has the ST packace with air conditioning, cruise/tilt and cloth interior. It has the rubber floor covering (what else do you need??) Its bright red with the light grey interior. And it has the chrome factory wheels. All in all its in very good shape.

I mainly wanted the extended cab and the short bed. My two car garage has a 22 foot long bay so a long bed quad cab at 20. 5' gives me very little room to physically walk around. But I have always wanted an extended cab... . but I really like having an 8' bed. Oh well, I cant have it all.

Whats a cab fresh filter, does it keep debris out of something??

Thanks for all the tips.

The cab air filter...

The cab air filter from Geno's filters the air intake into the cab (under the windshield). Not sure how much actual filtering it does, but the wife said the diesel smell is greatly reduced.

The 2wd QC shorties are a somewhat rare breed. I had the same issue you did - wanted something that would fit in the garage and wouldn't be impossible to park on campus.

If its original, you might want to change the serp belt. The old one makes a nice spare.
