I just priced out an 08, using the 'Build My Own' tool on the Dodge website and down at the bottom it shows a $995 charge for "BLUETEC Ultra-Clean Diesel System". This is $995 on top of the $6100 charge for the CTD. This seems like a load of garbage. My understanding is the BLUETEC thing is just a label. All of the 6. 7L engines (07. 5 forward) are 2010 emmission ready. I don't mind the marketing goobers deciding to stick a BLUETEC badge on the truck but to charge us an additional $995 for that badge is a load of bunk.

Am I missing something? According to the service manager at my dealer (who is a good guy) and to this press release, there's nothing new or different about a BLUETEC engine.

if you live in southern California, near Berkley, in/around Aspen or any other irrational/backwards place, think of it as cheap insurance against vandalism! :p

If you look at all the additional equipment that was added to meet the emissions requirements, the $995 additional charge is probably not enough to cover the costs. There is only so much pain the customer will take before they decide to buy something else. So I'm sure there was a lot of research that was done to come up with a number that would help recover some of the expense, but not drive off the customer. No business is going to give something away for free.

I'm no anti-capitalist and I'm all for a business recouping its cost. I just don't like to see the business being sneaky about it. Make the CTD option $7100 instead of $6100. Anyway, I'll get off my soap box.

When I ordered my new c&c two months ago I asked the sales manager if I could chose not to order that "option" on my truck. He smiled and said ". . fraid not. "

My guess is the "BlueTec" option is that part of the cost of the new engine that enables it to meet 2010 environmental wacko standards not yet required.

I think the $995 charge just shows you how much the government regulations are adding to the cost of the truck. If they just put it in the engine option cost, everyone might wonder why the engine option is so high. I think with the 2008 you get a little Blutec decal or something now... my 2007. 5 does not have that... so I guess you get a little more for your $995 now!

All we have to do is not vote for the people in office who allow these laws. You would have politicians changing there minds and maybe repealing some laws. We only have ourselves to blame, for we vote for these incompetent SOB's.

Yep, I agree! Many who complain the loudest on this forum have voted for years for the hacks that force that crap on us.

Easier said than done. Seems to me the politicians change their minds on things after they've been voted in. Either that, or just don't do what they said they were gonna do.

Ya, I know what you mean, our memory as a nation is just the pits. Just look at the presidential election, we are real close to electing another Clinton which will tax our fuel even more in the name of conservation. I'm just glad I'm old enough, so I wont have to see the fall of capitalism, or would I?

the blue tech is a different emission system. . i think its extra and required in ny ct ca mass etc. . probably why its a option ie not needed in other states?

just a idea. . may be like the urea injection on big trucks etc. .

One thing to consider is that the '08 come standard with an exhaust brake now. Adding an exhaust brake to some of the older trucks, to do it properly, will cost you $2,000 to $3,000 dollars. I know were paying more for the diesel now than we did a few years ago, but were getting more too. I won't worry about the bluetec charge.

So how do you keep the blue tech full? I've yet to hear this at a fuel stop,"Yeah, I'll take these Twinkies, mountain dew ,and a bottle of that UREA. "

Once and for all Cummins/Fleetguard has a licencing agreement with Daimler to manufacture the BlueTec Diesel Particulate Filter. The version chosen by Cummins for the current Dodge is to use the third event injection (inject raw diesel in the exhaust stroke) to fuel the DPF as opposed to the added cost and complexity of an other injector and electronic hardware to fuel the DPF. The BlueTec Diesel Particulate Filter does not use the UREA injection method, never has.

therabbittree,

Nope. As far as I can determine, the BlueTec system is required in all states. I had to get it with my 2008 which was purchased in Indiana.

As posted earlier, it's not an option. It's an additional charge with the diesel engine option. Like John, I'd feel better if they just added the cost to the diesel engine option. If they insist on showing it separately, they should not call it an "option. "
