Gentlemen,

I went and had a talk with my Grandfather today about his '01 ext. cab, SWB, CTD that I plan on buying at the end of the summer... . finally today he realized I'm serious about owning it, and he told me he's pretty sure he'll be buying a new one ('02) come July. Well, after being on this site for the last 3 months or so, I've learned quite a bit and wanted to really look over this truck... . I noticed a few things that I hadn't seen before, and learned some things he's done to it... ...

1. He had the lift pump replaced with less than 10,000 miles on it last year... . they actually did a full recall on it (I didn't know that there even WAS a recall on them, but he didn't get charged a dime) I cycled the key and the new one is still good (at least it ran) after 50,000 miles on it.

2. He had the exhaust manifold bolts re-done about 3 months ago, AND PAID FOR IT!!!!! I was under the impression that there is now a TSB out for this??? He was a little angered when he found that out... the stealer had told him that it wasn't even warranty material, get this, "cause it isn't engine or drivetrain". Now, to me, the exhaust is a pretty big part of the engine, but I guess not to the stealer.

3. He has lost 1-1/2 quarts of oil out of the engine at a single time twice now... . it pours out of the overflow bottle on the front of the engine. Both time, he has been headed down a steep grade at low speed and low RPM... . what's causing this? The stealer didn't give him the time of day about this, so he went to a Cummins shop... the guy there didn't have any clue either, other than that since the pan is shallow in the front that when he was going down such a steep hill that all the oil came forward and had nowhere else to go... . this a possibility? He'd really like to figure this one out, as the entire engine compartment is covered in oil.

That's all I can think of right now... . anything I should be watching on this truck before I work out the deal to buy it? When I do I'm gonna get a good deal on it, so that'll mean more $$$ for BOMBs!!! Oo. Oo. Oo. :D

Sorry for the long post, but thanks for any help. Also, what would be a decent price for this truck? 60,000 road miles, it was bought in February of '01, manufactured in January of '00.

Later, Josh.

TSB 09-002-01

The Cummins 5 year/100,000 mile warrantee specifically lists the exhaust manifold and any associated seals or gaskets. I believe that a call to the D/C Customer Service 800 number, demanding reimbursement for all repairs for loose manifold bolts is in order.

The oil will pour out the blowby if the engine is operated at an angle above the design parameters. Cummins lists these side/side and fore/aft angles on their engine specs though I only remember them not being very steep for continuous use.

A buddy who uses a Cummins for cruising extremely steep powerline roads had a Walker Airsep installed on his company rig due to the engine puking oil daily. It works but is pricey. Oil will also puke out of the front axle vent on steep slopes, it comes out under the airbox.

Thanks...

Thanks for the help so far...

Thomas... . I printed out that TSB and will have my Grandfather take it in and see what they say about it. Without the search, I'm lost for the customer service ### any chance you could throw it my way?

illflem... . That sounds just about right... just a normal thing that happens. Well, it sucks, but I guess. Any other way to fix it? I've read on here of guys totally getting rid of the bottle and just extending the hose on down and past the engine... this in my mind would at least get the oil away from the cab so it's just not covered like it is now... from the airbox to the brake master cylinder, and the entire under-hood liner is soaked in oil... it looks ugly, needs power washed.

Thanks again for the help.

Hey Josh, check out page 70 in issue 36(new one)of the TDR. . There is a TSB(# to be determined) that addresses the oil overflow out the crankcase breather.

Allright!!!

Thomas, Thanks for that number. I'll give it to him tomorrow and have him call them up and get his money back. He was just tickled pink when I told him that I'd found the TSB. Also, where would he go to find in writing that the 5 year/100,000 mile warranty covers the exhaust system? I understand, as does he, that this is just common sense, but, sense isn't always common, and doesn't seem to be with this stealer.

john, thanks for that pointer... . I'll go dig up the magazine at my friends house and have a look at it.

Thanks again, Josh.

Not sure on a diesel but on a gasser the exhaust manifold is covered even longer than the truck warranty because it's considered part of the smog control system. Toyota replaced the cracked exhaust manifold on my then 12 year old PU for free, in fact the Toyota dealer were the ones who discovered it and replaced it without even asking.

Warrantee book delivered with new vehicle will show you what is covered. My model year 2000 book shows what I posted above. I imagine the engine warrantee for model year 2001 is little different.

Josh

If your not going to buy a Fuel Pressure gauge when you get the truck buy one of Briar's Fuel pressure test gauges. On 2000 and later trucks it attaches to the VP44 in seconds and you can check the lift pump when ever you want. I got one (only charges $45. 00 complete) it works great and you can keep track of both your lift pump and the one on your Grand Fathers new 2002. When I checked mine at 40K miles it was dead. Dealer installed a new one no questions asked under the 5 year 100K engine warranty. It is also cover under the 7 year 70K emissions warranty. Good luck on your new ride :D

Pitbull... . the plan as of now is this... . I'm going to buy the truck, and leave it be until I get to school. Spend one week at school, then use the $3,500 I'm going to allocate to it (for now) and put pyro, boost, transmission temp, and fuel psi gauges in it, then put a DTT TC and V/B in it, next will be a Edge Comp box, then 4" straight exhaust, and if there's enough left over, DD2's. You guys think I can pull this for $3,500?

Thanks for all the help already. I'll pass all the info I've learned here today on to him tomorrow.

Later, Josh.
