Gentlemen,
I went and had a talk with my Grandfather today about his '01 ext. cab, SWB, CTD that I plan on buying at the end of the summer... . finally today he realized I'm serious about owning it, and he told me he's pretty sure he'll be buying a new one ('02) come July. Well, after being on this site for the last 3 months or so, I've learned quite a bit and wanted to really look over this truck... . I noticed a few things that I hadn't seen before, and learned some things he's done to it... ...
1. He had the lift pump replaced with less than 10,000 miles on it last year... . they actually did a full recall on it (I didn't know that there even WAS a recall on them, but he didn't get charged a dime) I cycled the key and the new one is still good (at least it ran) after 50,000 miles on it.
2. He had the exhaust manifold bolts re-done about 3 months ago, AND PAID FOR IT!!!!! I was under the impression that there is now a TSB out for this??? He was a little angered when he found that out... the stealer had told him that it wasn't even warranty material, get this, "cause it isn't engine or drivetrain". Now, to me, the exhaust is a pretty big part of the engine, but I guess not to the stealer.
3. He has lost 1-1/2 quarts of oil out of the engine at a single time twice now... . it pours out of the overflow bottle on the front of the engine. Both time, he has been headed down a steep grade at low speed and low RPM... . what's causing this? The stealer didn't give him the time of day about this, so he went to a Cummins shop... the guy there didn't have any clue either, other than that since the pan is shallow in the front that when he was going down such a steep hill that all the oil came forward and had nowhere else to go... . this a possibility? He'd really like to figure this one out, as the entire engine compartment is covered in oil.
That's all I can think of right now... . anything I should be watching on this truck before I work out the deal to buy it? When I do I'm gonna get a good deal on it, so that'll mean more $$$ for BOMBs!!! Oo. Oo. Oo.
Sorry for the long post, but thanks for any help. Also, what would be a decent price for this truck? 60,000 road miles, it was bought in February of '01, manufactured in January of '00.
Later, Josh.
