The same thing happened to a friend of mine who is too cheap to join the TDR
#ad
so he asked me to post this for you guys:
That guy has the same problem I had. There is no recall on the '97. As far as getting no vacuum he should check the line right out of the check valve at the vacuum pump. More than likely it has collapsed because of degradation due to oil. Replace that main line to the firewall, try to blow out the oil in the rest of the lines or suck it out with a shop vac. Pull out the check valve on the side of the pump and make sure that the nylon ball inside is not worn out, also be aware that there is supposed to be a spring behind the ball that keeps the ball pushed into the CLOSED position when the motor is off. The spring is inside the pump behind the ball and could pop out when you remove the valve. The spring in mine was stuck sideways and wasn't doing it's job. Also it may be necessary to replace the actuator valve that controls the vent system. This is the one closest to the accelerator pedal should have a yellow hose to it. Moparforless has them for about $36. It sounds to me like it's time for Daimler Chrysler to step up to bat and start taking care of this problem.
Post this so that the others can read, Thanks.
