I have a 96 4x4 and it's time for tires.

It does not snow too much in Delaware, but when it does, they have no idea what to do with it. Getting out of the development and out to the highway is always a lot of fun.

So what's a good tire for mostly fair weather driving, and the occasional adventure into the winter wonderland?

Gregor,it seems to me if you get a good quality highway tire and have it siped you'll get the best of both worlds. I've been running siped Toyos for 80k on my 4x4 2500,looks like their good for at least 30k more.

Switca:

Like alot of other things on these
trucks tires are another "personal
choice" decision.

However, I have been using the "B. F.
Goodrich Radial All-Terrain" tires
(285/75R 16) on my 96' Dodge CTD 4X4
for the last four years. I get real
good tread life out of them as long
as I rotate them every 3-4,000 miles.
Although we don't have much snow here
in eastern N. C. we occasionally do get
some. I drove in some last year (1-2
inches) and the tires performed real
well! I have been paying around $145
apiece for them. I also get in mud
with them occasionally and they do
well there also, as long as it is not
real deep mud. Another plus to me is
that the tires are quiet on the high-
way in light of their tread design.

I hope this has helped you some.

Siping is done after the tire is on the rim and aired. A machine cuts 1/2" deep slashes crosswise about 3/4" apart. The siping gives the tire better grip on snow&wet and also makes the the tire run much cooler on the dry, prolonging it's life. Most larger tire dealers do it for $5-$10 per tire,it can even be done to an old tire. I've been getting all my tires siped for the past five years and am very pleased. I've never heard any negitive aspects to siping nonwinter highway type tires.

Switca, save your money, you don't need to sipe your tires for the amount of snow you get in Delaware. I was living in Maryland when the big snowstorm hit and shut down Wash. DC for a week, I ran all over the place on the OEM Goodyears, HAD A BALL!! . Just go to Home Depot and get 3 tubes of sand for the back end and "stick er in FWD". You will do fine on any good quality tire rated M&S (mud & snow) just look for a tire that has a fairly open tred pattern and lots of factory sipes. I just put a set of the new Goodyear 235s off a 2001 ram on my 96, or the Michelen LTX AS is good. Think snow and go, Dave

PS it is hard to find a place to "sipe tires" back East, I have done it myself with a razor utility knife set at 1/4" depth, it cuts easyer if you wet the tred down, and YES it really does work well.

A siped tire makes a big difference in snow and ice. Only chains or studs will be better.

I have less then 7/32 left on some Toyos that are siped. They are getting me around in 2wd better then most in 4wd. Lots of new snow every day lately.

illflem, what model toyo tire have you been able to get 80,000+ miles out of (siped or unsiped)? Thanks

I just recently bought new tires. Goodyear Wrangler AT/S 305/70/16. They are very quiet compared to the BF Goodrich All-Terrains that I had on the truck for the last 70K. Treadwear was great on the Goodrichs, but they were slightly noisy. They were great in our NJ snow, and I believe the Goodyears will be even better due to two deep channels running around the tire. The winter will tell for sure.

I have a '96 two wheel drive gas Ram w/Goodyear Wrangler AT/S 245/75/16Es and went everywhere last year with snow and ice. Nice tread pattern, high load range and the two channels (like aqua tread) really do good in rain, snow, ice.

I'm gonna put them on my $x$ when the Michelins wear out.

If you want a tire that just like a BFG AT but don't want to pay that huge price, go with Kelly-Springfield Pathfinders. I put 315/70/16's on mine and I love them. They have the grip of BFG's but with better wear characteristics. Also good for snow and mud. You could probably turn black walls out on the tires and no one would notice the difference.
