Please help.

I have an ‘89 D250 with a 3spd automatic. Today I started it up and just threw it in neutral to get the trans going. When I went to put her in drive I heard/felt some kind of linkage or something snap. Now, it locks into park just fine, but has full play from reverse through drive. Just moved totally free. The trans will still kick into each one in the right spot and will drive ok, but I can’t imagine this is good. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

TorqueFlite A-727 - 1969 Dodge Charger 500 Rebuild - Bing video

This guy is very entertaining and it looks to me like a rebuild on this type of transmission is not overly difficult, probably some shops around that can beef it up too, some of the guys on here will know who to recommend. Not sure about parts availability but there were a lot of these made. My son got a big block engine with a 727 out of a wrecked motor home, pretty cheap from some backwoods wrecking yard.

There is a "rooster comb" in the trans that engages with a spring loaded ball to give you the notched feeling as it goes from gear to gear. The comb is just press fit to the shaft and over time sags enough to allow the ball to shoot out of the guide. trans valve body removal is required for repair.

It's moderately difficult to fix. At least the part is in the pan and didn't shoot off onto the side of the road somewhere. And gives you the access to change fluid/filter and adjust the bands. All good.
