I have a 96 Dodge automatic and both the brake light and ABS light are on is something bad in the ABS system or is it something else? I have cleaned the connections on the ABS and checked the fuses but the lights will not go out. Thanks
This happened on mine 2 wks agol Replaced the rearwheel sensor mounted on top of the rear axle. Real easy to do. had to get the sensor from the dealer though. Had to pry the old one out with a screw driver.
Thanks rambob I am going to check that tomorrow, I have been looking for leaks in the vaccum lines and checking all the other little things that can go wrong, but I think you might have found the problem. . thanks packmule
Just a question, Did your Spedo work when the rear speed sensor went out? or was just the part that monitors ABS and brakes go out of it. Just a question, because my Spedo works fine but my Brake and ABS light is on.
Does the 96 pick up the road speed from the rear end sensor? My 95 did not and I had your same problem. It turned out that the prongs that went into the plug on the rear end were loose in the connector. I had to replace the 2-foot long wiring harness that goes from the sensor to the frame. That solved it.
I did inadvertantly buy a new sensor, which I have and will sell. You'll have to see if it will work on a 96. Check the connectors first though.
Sam, Same thing happened to my truck at 50k. It's the rear wheel sensor on top of the rear axle. I tried to clean the pickup and it still didn't work. You might try cleaning it first and save some money.
One hour job, I removed the spare tire to make it easy to get to. Plus a few beer breaks added to the time.
I think the part cost somewhere between 30 and 40 bucks.
