AC Evaporator - Need a new one. Where to find?

So what seemed so simple as usual got very complicated.

My AC Evaporator decided to get a hole and blow smoke out the vents. I ordered replacement parts from RockAuto and got them. Ripped apart truck, got the parts out, found hole in old one, went to put in new one and this is what I found:

Seems the replacement ones are not bent at the same 30ish deg to allow for the angle of the heater box.

So I ordered another evap from another place. It arrived. Same thing! :{

Anyone know of a place you can get a correctly formed one? I cant bend the existing ones as the pipe is too thick and the small feeder pipes start to bend. If they crack, I am back to square one. Light headedness while driving! :-laf

My evaporator has been bad for about 3 yrs now and this is one of the exact reasons for my procrastination.

I ordered one for a '92 from Oriely's for my '85 swap, and it was a smashed up POS!! I don't know how many places it had been shipped, or what engine blocks had been rolled over it while in the box, but it was no better than what I had. So I showed them, they "accidentally" gashed the hell out of it(BIG swing for a small guy!!), and it was sent back as defective. It didn't have the angle to it, I noticed at the time, comparing it to the old one, but the next one did... ... Both were Murray#54108, and the second one fit perfectly. The old one was corroded and stopped up from 10yrs of West Texas dust, but it might still be good, I didn't care to check it. I don't know why one was angled and the other wasn't. Boxed wrong?!?! You might call Rock Auto and see what they think... ... and certianly ask about the 54107 as PayChk suggested..... my $. 02...

I agree with DVolk above. I recently did exactly that. I drove my truck in to the local radiator shop, a local small business that has been in business at their location for 40 or 50 years, left the truck, and went away. A couple hours later they called and I returned to pick up the truck. Bill was about $200.

My OEM condensor was damaged by not one but THREE dummies at local small, private detail shops.

The first and second detailers used commercial grade pressure washers to destroy the fins on my evaporator.

The third dummy was me for trusting those morons to detail my truck.

Yes, the four seasons part is wrong. I tried to order one of the two bent ones that would work and it is no longer available!

Yeah. Both that I have now seen have been beat to *%#@. I would say they have been sent back many times for being wrong.



54107 is 1. 5" shorter in length... . I tried that too. :{

I got one for a 91 at Advance Auto (Factory Replacement brand #3880729). It fit perfectly.

$ 200. 00 is cheap considering the freon if you used R12 is about $50. 00 a pound

Went to rad shop. They said not fixable. Time to get a new one. They pulled out their catalog of exacly the same thing as the other places! The Four Seasons catalog... .

Grrr.

I have a lead on one that might be correct. Different brand. Will call tomorrow and see what I can find.

Can't brlieve this is so difficult. Has nomone else encountered this? There are enough 81-93 trucks still on the road... .

How about going to the dealer with the VIN and getting the dodge P/N and searching the 4 seasons cat. for it?

Did that after the first time I got the wrong part. When I went to order the second one from a local store, I went with dodge pn in hand. That matches the wrong one. The 54108.

105408 Spectra Premium. That's the discontinued one that looks right that I am tracking down. Will know this morning if I found one or not.

I replaced the one in my 93 in Nov. of 09. Oreillys' part number was 909314 with a price back then of 100 bucks. Don't know if this helps you or not, but it fit perfect in mine. However the heater core I got from them had to have a little modification to work.

OK. Update time!



I have the truck back together after two weeks of playing around trying to find parts. After 5 cores I managed to get a 95% correct one from NAPA. Part #A9395.



For those looking at doing theirs, it is not hard, just time consuming. It took about 10 hours to pull everything out and reassemble.

Also for those looking for a new heater core to put in while they have the box out, it is Spectra Premium part # 94619. It is a little thicker than the stock one, and it is aluminum and not copper, but it is all that is available.
