Listen up people! I built race engines for a living, and I live by the rule, Don't leave anything unchecked! I checked my valves at 2,300 miles and found them all out of spec and adjusted them . 010 in. and . 020 ex. cold
I just adjusted them again today 32,000 miles and the same results, they where all loose, and what a DIFFERENCE in driveability and smoothness, my idle even came up a little.
Do yourselves a favor and check your valves, you might be suprised!!!

Good point Ted... I had mine adjusted right after I took delivery and all where out. Then I have done them every 15,000 kilometers . There is not distinct pattern but there are always more then 6 that need adjustment. Sure glad my friend is a Diesel mechanic.

Out of curiosity, was there significant wear in the guides? I'm also wondering if the valve springs are showing any signs of less resiliance (wastegate springs exhibit this behavior over time), which might lead to the tolerance problem. This seems to be an advantage hydraulic lifters have over traditional rocker arms, in turbo applications, from my btdt.

I agree with the initial check. After that every 20 - 40K miles is plenty. THIS ONLY APPLIES TO 12V ENGINES. 24V is a whole different design needing far less adjustment.

I have 135K on my engine and the last 2-3 adjustments I have found more than 50% of the valves dead on and the others less then . 01 - . 02 off. I do run synthetic oil but In ND you get a chance to experiece all climates and driving conditions.

I is not that hard a job to run the valves and if doing yourself do as often as you want. If you are hiring out the specified 25K is plenty.

Thanks Ted. How about telling some of the members what will happien if your intakes or exhausts are a little tight or loose from a performance and fuel economy point of view.

Wow. This went from 1999 to 2008.

Here's a page of 12v info that includes Valve Lash adjustment.
