Aeroturbine Question

I purchased an Aeroturbine muffler for my 05. I plan on mounting the Aeroturbine as close to the converter as possible, removing the stock muffler and having a new piece of pipe bent to connect the Aeroturbine and the stock tailpipe. I want to keep the stock muffler and pipes so that whenever I sell this truck I can return the system to stock. I called around to several muffler shops trying to find someone who could bend 4" pipe and preferably 409 stainless steel like the stock system. I found one shop that can bend 4" but they can not bend (and garrentee a clean bend) stainless steel, just aluminized. My question is, will there be any kind of bi-metal reaction joining aluminized pipe to the SS? Also, how long could I expect the aluminized to last? My '99 that I traded had 115,000 miles on it and the system looked like new. Was it aluminized or stainless?

You shouldn't have any issues mixing stainless/aluminized. You can get the SS offset pipe you are looking for through www.dieselpowerproducts.com. I ordered my complete system through them and it has been great. I did go with the aluminized myself.



I would expect the aluminized to last 4+ years for me. A lot of times, the exhaust rusts from the inside out, so if you make a lot of short trips, they tend to go out quicker. I run my truck for about 1000 miles a week, so I'm not too worried about it deteriorating. It is about 3 months old, and there are no signs yet.

I just got the aeroturbine today. This thing is short! only 20" long. Should sound great. I am going to email Diesel Power Products to see if they will sell just the pipes I need.

I put the 4040L on so that the system would be a little quieter. Mark will tell you to mount it as close to the cat as possible. I second that. It sounds awesome under load, but when I set the cruise, it is very smooth/quiet. It doesn't make any extra noise unti lI get over 2100rpm pn the highway. The install is very simple, especially if you have a chop saw. It only took about an hour to get it all put together.

Well guys, I got the pipe I needed from DPP. This thing is allot louder than I thought it would be, especially under load. Normal driving it sounds great but under load or hard excelleration it sounds like a rice burner! So I believe it will have to go and I am searching for some other alternative. Been looking at Magnaflow, MBRP, Donaldson... any suggestions?

Don't get rid of the aero turbine, leave it and install a donaldson muffler behind it. I believe you can get those donaldsons in a lot of different lengths.

We get this call all the time, the Aeroturbine is loud, and expensive for a short 20 inch muffler. We have sold a lot of Aeroturbine customers our MBRP replacement performance muffler for the 2004. 5 and up trucks. It's much larger, fits the stock mounts (it has welded hangers that go right into the stock mounts the stock system used) it's built from T-409 stainless just like the stock system is, and it's basically stock sound levels except for extra turbo whistle. Now if you want to really hear the 5. 9 talk when you have yor foot in it get our cat test pipe for off road and racing use, this make it sound like a Cummins of years past etc. The test pipes are available in 409 stainless and aluminized as an option.



You will get electrolosis (SP) when you mix any stainless and aluminized, it won't happen overnite or anything like that but in a fairly short time the aluminized will corrode at the joint where the two metals "slip" together. Of course drier climates will have less problems with this than wet ones as the water and humidity help the process proceed much faster.

Your muffler is definately in the running Mark. Just waiting for a few others to respond. I would like the system to be just a bit louder than stock but not neer as loud as the aeroturbine. I searched all through your web site and see all the different systems but no listing for just the muffler. I'll probably be calling you later this afternoon.

I think this whole rice burner thing is just for the 600 motors. Or maybe just autos. My buddies 05 auto sounds pretty good, but not nearly as good as my 03. If I can figure out how, I have a video of me on a dyno and it really doesn't do justice to the deepness of the sound unless you have a decent sound setup. We had the computer plugged into the tv to watch the vids and it is hooked to the stereo and I was amazed at how well the low, deep sound of the exhaust recorded! I got alot of compliments at May Madness on the sound of the exhaust. BTW, mine has nothing in it but pipe and the Aeroturbine. No cat, no muff, no resonator tip, nuthin. LOVE IT!

Also, if you put a 5" tip on it it *may* possibly help deepen out the sound and clean it up. It did on mine. Also, there are resonator tips available. Worst case, install a muff after it but don't take it out. I would definetly kep it in there if it was me, muff or not.

I called DPP this morning and they sold me on the test pipe and the MBRP muffler, just over $200. 00. After talking with them I've decided against the aeroturbine and the donaldson. The aeroturbines are $199. 00, and the 54 inch donaldson was going to cost me $95. 00 around town.

They do offer the muffler only, but you need to call them. I bought the T409 stainless steel test pipe, muffler, and a T309 5" stainless tip.

I got my aeroturbine for not much more than that, INCLUDING the cat delete pipe, offset pipe, clamps, hanger... I could have saved a few bucks, and yes the aeroturbines are overpriced... but it sounds and flows awesome. In the end a few mucks wasn't that important to me on a ~45K truck.

That won't really do any good. Everyone's microphones are different and the system you're playing back on can't duplicate the rumble of hearing it in person. To me the most important factor was a low rumble that's not too "crackly" and harsh. There's no way you can record that. I love the aeroturbine... haven't tried the MBRP but that was my initial plan. The reason I got the aero was that when I talked to several exhast vendors they said some people complained of drone but installing the aeroturbine before the muffler it got rid of the drone. So I decided to save some dough and skip the muffler... no drone and happy so far!

If someone knows how, I can post vids of me on the dyno at May Madness. The exhaust was a HUGE hit. I got compliments all day on it. And yes, the recording was very good, but you need to have the capable equipment to reproduce the sound. Done it! Plugged computer in to budies stereo to play video, sounded just like you were next to the truck. I just don't know how to post the vid. If someone knows, hit me!

So why does mine sound so bad? I drove her around all weekend and had a few buddies listen while I ran it hard up a steep hill and they all said the same thing. . Sounds like your fartin through a hawian punch can! Don't sound like a truck for sure and really don't sound like a diesel. I am calling Mark today and getting a MBRP sent out ASAP.

That's why I didn't like the straight pipe either. It just doesn't sound right. You just need some sort of straight-thru muffler to take the rasp out. You should be happy with that MBRP.

So how would you compare the two, to someone who hasn't heard them back to back?

To me the Aeroturbine has a nice tone at idle and light throttle. It is under heavy foot and a heavy load that I found it unexceptable. Again, I compare it to the sound you would hear from a rice burner.

The MBRP sounds real close to the aeroturbine at idle and light throttle but does not have that excessive volume at heavy throttle. To be fair I haven't towed my trailer with it yet but I took her out for a good run last night on some good hills around here that I travel every day and you know you have something better than stock but it's not excessive. It has a very nice tone to it even under full throttle. The MBRP mounts up perfectly to the factory mounts as advertised and comes with an offset pipe to tie it all together. Since I had already cut my stock pipes back to the Cat. , I had to use the offset pipe that I bought for the aeroturbine. Many on here have said they like the sound of the aeroturbine. Maybe it's an age thing or just me but I like the MBRP much better.
