Well, after much procrastion I ordered the #5 TST plate ($50. after returning the old #8) and AFC spring kit. Installed the plate today and decided to try the stronger of the two springs in an effort to control smoke.

After a test drive a moment ago I now know that I made a mistake, while the truck pulles stronger once boost is up, it takes what seems like forever to start building boost and making power. But on the plus side there is very little smoke and a noticable increase in power according to the old Seatometer.

Guess I'll try the light spring tonight.

I wasn't able to get ANY smoke control using the light spring. I have the med. spring which gives a real good compromise on my engine. Best control for smoke is stack exhaust. Blow it up high and it will not be as offensive. Look at the big rigs, some of them are blowing a lot of smoke.

I am also running the medium spring and can adjust it to the no smoke but generally run it 10 clicks richer which give me a puff just before boost come in.

OK, OK, bombaholics, quit confusing the fledgling bomber #ad

With injectors up to 215s and the 160, 175, or 180 hp pump, the light spring is usually best.
With 370 injectors the medium spring is usually best.
With 215 hp pumps, the medium spring is usually best.

FLEDGLING BOMBER!!!! I'LL HAVE YOU YOUNG WHIPPERSNAPPERS KNOW I WAS THRASHING 427 VETTES AND POWER IMPAIRED STANGS WHEN YOU WERE POOPING GREEN. AND ANOTHER THING... #ad

Joe is correct, just as the instructions with the AFC kit suggests, the light spring is better for the 175hp engines, at least in my case with 215 injectors.

After changing the spring out and adding about 20 clicks of preload, fuel/boost comes up much quicker. Smoke is about the same as with the old #8 plate and stock spring.

Thanks, Ronnie
