After market brake controller

I can’t believe a dealer would order a 3500 truck designed to tow without the factory brake controller.
Is it a simple plug and play with an aftermarket controller like the older trucks or more involved with the new electronics?
Any recommendations for an aftermarket controller?.

well, my Tradesman 3500 came without a brake controller.. and I was good with it like that.

new truck came with the Mopar adapter cable and instructions in bag under the back seat.
yes its simple to put in.
amounts to plugging adapter cable into brake controller and connecting to existing harness under the steering column and mounting the controller.
in my case I bought a Tekonsha controller for about 70 bucks.

so simple a caveman can do it and look on the bright side, you don't have to finance that brake controller for 60 months. LOL

Yes it’s that easy, I like the P3 Tekonsha myself due to it’s simple intuitive display & adjustability. E trailer has pictures of the location of the factory harness your looking for. You do need an adapter harness & it’s simple plug and play

This is interesting, because if your truck would have come with the factory ITBM, it would have a problem with unplugging the ITBM and installing a P3. I did exactly that with my 2014, and it was fine with it up to about a year ago when the truck suddenly indicated a problem with the Electronic Braking System (which was bogus) after a software update. The fake EBS failure caused the cruise to be disabled so I couldn’t just ignore it. Reinstalling the ITBM fixed everything, including the previous problem I had with the original ITBM. I still have the P3 in case I had to switch back, but so far all is well. - John
