Want to put a tach in my 90 but cant really find any. How do you install one on a truck that didnt come with one. Heard somthing about some hooking up to the alternator or somthing, pretty confused on that But anyway can you guys give me some info on how they would hook up and where to get one, cheap preferably.

Thanks in advance

Cade

What size are you wanting? 2 1/16" or big like mine, its 3 3/8". www.isspro.com. You can get one that works off a magnet glued to the vibration dampner or an alternator tach like mine. I paid $85ish for mine. Look to spend that much to $100 for a good one. I don't know how much Isspro wants for their fancy 2 1/16" EV series tach PLUS sensor kit. I wouldn't order direct as they will charge you more. Find a distributor. Anyone that deals with isspro or autometer should be able to get you want you want, even if they don't advertise that item sold on their site. I got mine from www.scheiddiesel.com.

To use a tach that uses the signal from the alternator you need to run a signal wire from one of the alternator's rectifiers. You'll have to remove the rear alternator cover, and attach the wire (using a ring connector) to one of the screws going to a rectifier (one of several. . any one). That will give the signal to the tach. You will then have to calibrate it using an optical tachometer as it may be off a bit.

Or you can use the glue on magnet type.

Thanks Guys, Was That 85 Dollors For Everything Too Hook It Up Also Or Was It Just The Tach? Thats In The Right Price Range For Me. How Do You Go About Calabrating It, Like Who Would Have An Opticle Tach. Would It Be Possible To Sync It Up With A Tiny Tach For Calibrating It? Thanks Agian

I paid $85 for my Isspro alternator tach. It comes with a harness, but you have to hard wire it. Wire to ground, ignition switched power, 12V light, its ground, then one wire out to the alternator with a ring terminal on the end. Connect to one of the alt's rectifiers as Jay said. I still haven't gotten mine calibrated. I've got it pretty close by ear. Dyno sheets show it's topend very close as well.

Cade, Swankmetal and I bought tachs at Surplus Center, only $20! They work good, are only about 20-30 RPMs off. I wired my alternator and posted instructions w/ pics. Swank had trouble getting his to work and posted for help, I bought one and figured it out. After I posted it only took him an hour to wire his. I mounted mine with a small bracket and a hose clamp, its a little crude but it looks o. k. I just hate to spend money on something I can do myself. Being cheap is the mother of invention! :D

Got mine fro Autometer - Z-series - really like it, matched the factory gauges almost perfectly. It has the alternator pickup unit. Simple install, and does need to be calibrated. Most diesel shops can do it.

I bought an optical tach for less than $100. Makes a nice addition to my tool box.

Most auto repair shops will have one.

No matter how you calibrate it... do it around 2000 rpm or so... that's where it counts.

that is the same tach that I have in my 80 w200, and 93 d250. it is an easy instalation.

What surplus center did you get tachs for $20 from and are they still available? that sounds good to me I hate spending money I don't have to as well.

Tiny Tach IMO are only good for holdind a RPM so you can actually read them, I am pretty familiar with them being a small engine machanic, I was just wondering if they can be used to sync in an alternater tach.

Thanks for the input. will probly get the isspro alternater unless I can get one for twenty bucks. :-laf

CSchafer, www.surpluscenter.com. Part#28-1541-E. Look around on there, they have several different ones. There is only one of this part #, but there are others available. Most of them are Autometer. If you get one and have any questions about hookup, let me know.
