I have ordered a ProComp (Holley Clone) "Blue" pump rated at 130gph and 14# max pressure to replace the Dodge retro-fit i-tank pump on my early 04 truck. Do I need a regulator with this pump? What kind of pressures should I run?

Also installing new larger Fuel Filter and also Water Separator with the pump. Do I go through the water separator first, then the fuel filter? Should I put a return line in the system? If so, where should it be located? Before or after the filters? I thought I would just leave the stock filter in place foe good measure. I will also install a fuel pressure gauge near the original filter housing on the engine.

I've been running a Holley Blue unregulated for 3 years now. The main reason I bought it is it's flow and pressure are closely matched to engine demand (on a stock engine). You won't need a regulator.

If you're running a separate filter and water separator, I think you want to go through the separator first, but I'm not sure.

You won't need a return line if you're not running a regulator.

My Holly blue didn't work well with the supplied regulator, low pressure'
Removed it, Than Pressure about 12 and drop to 9-10, Pump lasted about 6 months and started loosing pressure' Called Holly, They said pump must be below tank, no suction,.
I had pump as low as possible, but with low fuel& hot weather,
(Florida ) pressure would drop,,,
I than installed the 1 of the 2 Low Pressure OEM pumps that I had removed.
This resulted in Too much pressure ( 15-18 psi was more than I
wanted ). I installed a bypass regulator, Pressure runs around
12 Psi, Can not get it below 10 Psi even with Low /Hot fuel.

So Poor performing OEM LP in series with Holly Blue seems to
be working fine...

The OEM will push trough the Holly, and The Holly will pull through the OEM, But in both cases, pressure VERY low, Emergency use only. ( I do carry the other OEM LP as a back up ) plus a 'hose' splice to bypass either LP).

I hate to break down or run a VP44.....

My pump is mounted on the frame rail near the tank, roughly level with the bottom of the tank. It sucks up through the OEM pickup assembly.

The pump has been flawless for 3 years now, but I suspect the internal bypass regulator recently stuck open. On initial startup I get 15-16 psi, which immediately settles down to 12-13 psi.

When I installed the pump, I fully expected to have to replace it eventually. I'm just not sure how long it will last. If I were doing the job over again today, I would probably use the new Holley Billet pump. But when I built my system I bought 2 Holley Blue pumps (one as a backup), so that's what I'll use again when this pump finally quits.

Here's a website that discusses some of the details of my fuel system.

I ordered a 1/2" Drawstraw II and 1/2" lines. May use a Mallory 140 pump that I already have and setup the new Holley as a spare. Would it make sense to have the water separator between the tank and the fuel pump? That would keep the water and larger trash from going thru the pump.

Why not just use the Air Dog from Pure flow. One unit, water sep and filter in a compact set up. You can get the 150 gph if you need or the 100 which flows plenty of fuel. Works great and last for years.

BTW, RJWEST, if you have the stock lift pump on the engine and are pusing through it, if it fails, in most cases it will block the flow of fuel. I noticed your sig says you have an 02 with a vp44. Unless they changed the pump and put it in the tank you would have the one on the block. FYI

Both LP's mounted on frame rail, close to tank, OEM feeds the
Holly Blue...
I have a relay for the Holly Blue that is controlled by a 2 position sw. I can turn the Holly Off, On without the Eng running or
leave it operate from the OEM LP. Thats How I know
How much each LP will Push/pull through an inop LP...

The Holly running with eng off makes bleeding a Filter change real easy...

I finished my install. Fuel pump, dual filter/water separators, Draw Straw II, tank vent mod, 1/2" lines all the way to the injector pump. I haven't driven it yet, but my truck starts even quicker and idles smoothly immediately. It used to take 10-15 seconds to smooth out. Also did BHAF with heat shield install. Still need to install my HTS valve body, 1. 5" front leveling spacers, and the fuel pressure gauge when it gets here.

I installed the new fuel pressure gauge at the inlet elbow on the stock filter canister and I'm reading 40-50# Is this too high? I ran 1/2" line from the 1/2" Drawstraw II in the tank all the way through the pump, twin filters, stock filter, and to the CP3 pump. It only reduces at the pump (3/8" pipe) and the stock canister. Maybe I will have to add a regulator and return line if this pressure is too high?
