i need some advice on installing an aftermarket tachometer in my '92, i was wondering if anyone has had this experience with finding a good one and installing it. thanks

ES, at some point there was a factory plug for hooking up tachs. My 93 has it, not sure about 92s. There are several good threads about this in the forum.

92s and 93s had the plug in. As far as I know, ISSPRO is the only one that uses the factory plug in- the rest use a pickup on the crank or the alternator.

The plug in for the tach (I used the ISSPRO tach in my 93) is a pain to get to. It is a small 4 wire plug behind the left side of the dash above the head light switch. I had to pull the dash to get to it. The connection needs really good contact or it will give you false RPM readings.

Tach

I have not put one on mine yet partly because I do not want to have screw around with the alternator to have a tach. Then when the alternator goes out you have to go thru a hassle with the tach again. I know that Car Quest has a pick-up that works off the flywheel that I want to use, but I have not figured out yet exactly which one to use.

I put in a Isspro R8503 with a 1992 and later sensor kit. It came with instructions to match the existing plug under the dash. It came with instructions too. Works great.

the only one it looks like geno's has is the ISSPRO 5501 series, it doesnt say if it works with the factory plug in. how difficult is it to install the magnetic kit?

The magnetic kits function well. However your truck would have the factory plug. Use it. The factory performed half of the work for you. be sure to use the plug intended for the tach. The other one is used for the electric mirror (motor) If you have the electric mirrors then its the one under there with the four female spade connectors in the common flat plug. Some find the plastic plugs are grey.

The directions with the install kit you'll need has a pretty good description and "how to"

I think most of these 4000 rpm 2" tachs work. The install kit is the key. Sometimes I have had to r emove the resistor from the back of the tach.

I kept part numbers from all the tachs I have installed over the years. However, ISSPRO does change the gauge time to time. Like the EV series and now the EV II.

Let me know what gauge you want and maybe I have installed it. There is a different no. for the different face colors.

I would suggest a toll free call to Geno's 1-800755-1715 and ask. I think it is a matter of including an instruction sheet with the gauge that details which wires go to which prongs of the switch. I do not remember this part of the process being to difficult. I have the instruction sheet and can send it to you.

I am planning to go with the Isspro R5503 tach. This tachometer can be directly used with the factory plug provided on 92 & 93 pickups. I have read that the "adapter plug" that Isspro sells for this application is worthless. The wires are actually put together backwards. Every person I have talked to on this tachometer explained that all it takes is cutting and splicing to add length to the wire and connect the plug to the tachometer itself.
