It is time to replace my tires again, and I am searching for a good set. I started with Michelin A/S's (factory) which lasted 40,000. Then Yokohama's Superdigger IV - 18,000 and they were worn out :( , but they were great in mud. Next was Michelin XPS tractions, good in mud, good on road, 75,000 miles, but winter came (moved to Ohio) and they had no snow traction. I have a set of BFG Commercial T/A tractions (rated for snow) now and the truck won't track straight and handles like a boat.

What tires and brands are being used heavily off/on road with towing?

Thanks for any input.

Jeff

PS - I am in the mud and the snow while pulling the trailer about 20% of the time, so traction is very important!

Don't know what size you are running but I run the 255/85-16 BFG Mud Terrains on my truck, I don't tow that much but I plow, and I have never plowed with a more capable pick-up/plow truck in my life. BFG makes the MT's in a 235/85 which is E rated. I got 70,000 out of my last set by rotating them.

Firestone Destination M/T's. Mine have 20000 miles on them and are just beginning to show wear. I have been up to my axles in mud before with a fully loaded cattle trailer and that did not phase them at all.

Turbo tim,

Is that 70k all pavement? I'm looking for a good mud tire with long tread life and low noise. I guess I want everything, but is the BFG close?

Turbo Tim,

I have heard of a few people running 255's, but they touch if loaded, which is suppose to be a bad thing. I have moved from 215-85-16's to 235's, to get more contact patch and more tire choices, and they don't touch if the pressure is set right. BFG customer service has told me that touching in the middle will rip the tire apart internally. Were you using stock wheels? Spacers?

I take it from the fact you are plowing that the BFG MT's are good in snow and mud. How are they on the street?

DPike - Are the Firestones noisy? Do they work well in snow also? How do they handle the street?

THanks,

Jeff

I had Bridgestone Dualler MT's 32 11. 50x15's on my old half ton, got great mileage out of them and they where not noisy on the highway, Got Wrangler ATS with silent armor and they make my truck "wallow" not impressed at all.

On my 2002 3500 4x4 I have Bridgestone Revo's and they are great in rain, snow and dry.

I have about 36,000 miles on them and they still look good. Very quite (stock size)

I bought two Durango MT 235's for the front this winter. They steer nice and have lots of meat. And they're cheaper than the Cooper's.

They are noisy above 55 mph. They have no siping, but I think they work very well in the snow and on icy roads. They balance well and ride nice. They also work surprisingly well on the street as a steer tire. I forgot to mention the GY Workhorse extra grips like the picture shown. We have them too, and I like them. They are a little quieter, probably last longer and are better in snow due to the siping, but no where near as good in mud.

Personally, I like the Coopers. I had 235 85 17s on my 97 with no problems at all. The truck originally came with Interco Truxus 255 85 16s with a 1/4" spacer. Didn't really care either for the swamper type tires, the slight front end shimmy at 55-60 (4. 10s). You might also look at Mastercrafts which are made by Cooper and a little less bucks for a great tire.

Right now I'm experimenting with Hankook 225 70 19. 5s.

I did some E rated Cordovas (made in KY) last time. I have around 70,000 mi on them, and they are ready to change. The only thing I did not like about them was the sidewall stregnth was poor. The truck seemed to yaw quite a bit on them.

The 255's can be used on the 2000 or 2001 and newer because there was different spacing, 235's would be the limit on your 99. The BFG's do great in the mud and are pretty quiet as long as you don't get strange wear patterns.

I am on my second set of BFG all terrains 235 85 r16. I have averaged about 40-45,000 miles on each set. Very good snow traction, road noise to me is not any worse than any other tire I have had. Load range E and I tow heavy quite often. I will definitely be buying a third set when it is time to replace these.

super swamper makes a tire specifically for drw's. they are I beleive the truxs which are available in load range E. are "supposedly" quiet. and I think would give you all the grip you would need off road. I would check their website

Well, the BFG Commercial T/A tractions do O. K. in the mud, but pack up pretty bad. I was able to get the Arctic Fox into its spot in our back yard, but it took me 3 hours to clean the mud out of the tires with a pressure washer. Had to take both duals off the truck to clean the mud out. The 235's are closer together than the 215's, so more mud stays in, and it is harder to clean out.

I will check into the Super Swampers, and see what else I can find. These BFG's just don't feel stable, too much sway in the turns. The firestones are looking like a possible alternative as well.

Thanks for the input.

Jeff
