Hey all, hoping I can find some help here on the forum regarding the recent issues I have been having with the rear air leveling suspension on my 2014 Ram 2500. I tow often on the weekends, so the system does get "worked" going between ALT Trailer mode and Normal mode in addition to the leveling feature when a load is in the bed.

Back in October, I started to have an intermittent issue with the air suspension on a particularly cold night (approx 29 degrees F - nothing crazy.) Started the truck and was met with a message saying "Immediate Air Suspension Service/Repair Required." I chocked it up to being a colder night and maybe the compressor was being cranky. I was not able to change the rear height. From then on, the message would only appear intermittently - no correlation to being cold, warm, rainy or dry. As time went on, the message would appear more frequently until the message appeared every time the truck was started.

I went through and checked all the electrical connectors; each ride height sensor for both sides, both connectors at the compressor itself. Unplugging them, cleaning with electrical contact cleaner and plugging back in. Checked the fuses (all three located under the hood related to the air suspension system) and they checked out good.

Truck is not losing air, the ride height does not change, indicating a presence of a leak in the system, so I am thinking it has to be a sensor or connection? Upon starting, the system will purge the air, but then the compressor will not kick on to adjust.

I am not someone to take the truck to the dealer unless I have to - heard some horror stories during my searches of people having issues with the air suspension and having the dealers just throw parts at it hoping something will work with the most common being throwing a new compressor in which in all cases I have read, does not fix it. I find it hard to think that the compressor is my issue, as if the compressor was locked up, it would be blowing the fuse repeatedly.

Can someone lend a hand here? I am at a loss, and there is not much information regarding these systems for the HD trucks (much more on the 1500's.)

Thanks in advance!!

Answered on ramforumz, here is what I replied...

"I have had an intermittent air suspension message on mine, "SERVICE AIR SUSPENSION-SEE DEALER" but it never stays on more than a few seconds at the most, but it hasn't popped up in the last few weeks.
A dealer level scan tool will allow the BCM to be scanned for air suspension fault codes or pending codes, may possibly be able to use the AlfaOBD as well.
Find a good independent shop, they may have a scan tool that will work."

If he plans to fix it himself, he's going to need to buy, rent, borrow a compatible scan tool. Or pay someone to pull the codes. Otherwise throw parts at it is all one can do.

Hmm... Sounds like what I told him.
Yep I said it too once you said he didn't have codes. Just more simplified. But I did add without codes, he can only throw parts at it. You left that out, if you want to get picky lol

Hey all, (hey Ltngdrvr, fancy seeing you here too) thanks for the replies. Earl, I just pulled the codes with a consumer scanner and got 2 codes that are seemingly unrelated. (P20B7 code for Reductant Metering Unit Heater Control Circuit Low, a P2002 Diesel Particulate Filter Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1) But is now also showing the truck in a Battery Saver Mode. I am thinking that maybe the issues can be related back to a battery failure? My Interstates are 4 years old to the month right now. I will reach out to a buddy of mine who has a $$$$ snapon scanner, and see what those codes show. I'll report back.

You need to access all modules for all codes, that takes a above average scan tool.

Weak/iffy batteries can definitely affect computerized systems. Best to see what codes you have for the suspension.

Earl

Those Interstates are junk . But I do like getting almost free ones from Costco. I'll bet they are the culprit.

This will be the first time I would be having an issue with the Interstate Batteries since I opt for the top of the line batteries, but am very interested to see if it is the cause... Just very ironic that I am getting a Battery Saver Mode now ontop of the slew of codes the truck is spitting out. Bringing the truck to have the batteries table tested tomorrow and see what comes of that.

‘Not sure why you’d think Interstate are junk. They’ve impressed the heck out of me by giving 20 years of service in Alaska. I have one in my boat that is a 1997 vintage and is still working well.

And, again, answered on ramforumz...

2 years in my truck they wouldn't turn over. I got better life out of delco battery. Maybe the the costco ones are junk.

Should be a compressor system. My 18 3500 is. Believe only the 1500 trucks had the nitrogen system.

Earl
to the best of my knowledge the system is a closed loop and the bags bleed off to a tank the compressor fills from the same tank. if the tank pressure is low you will get a fault.
