Air Tank mounting

Any of the bros. out there have photos and/or info on air tank size, location and method of mounting? I found an air horn at a yard sale retired from a semi... LOUD. Gotta do it!

I use a 8 gal. portable air tank that is mounted in my cross frame tool box. You could mount the same in a pickup bed and hide it in a cross bed box. Run the air line under the cab (you will need to drill a hole in the bed and tool box) to wherever you have the horn mounted. I have mine in the engine compartment. It is a single 26 inch long Hadley with a 5 inch bell.

I have a 4 gallon tank hung from the cross beams of the bed on the right side ahead of the wheel well. Hadley horns behind the bumper

Check out onboardair.com The guy there (Brad Kilby) has DOT approved air tanks and all the stuff to hook them up. His prices are some of the better I've found. He's in the final stages of developing a bracket kit to put a York compressor under the hood of a v-10. Now I'll be able to run my hadley's and air tools at the same time #ad

Statland, Yeah, I meant to say taht the prices are the best I've found. I wonder If Brad Kilby is working on a compressor set up for a diesel? The York compressors are capable of 4. 2 cfm of at least 120psi.

The 2. 5 gal "hot dog" tank easily fits under the regular cab.

I removed the seat and pulled up the carpet, then drilled holes through the floor to mount the tank.

Dave, Now thats what I had in mind, looks good! Do you have a compressor or just fill it up now and then?

Those nerf tubes, are they mounted to the frame only or do they have "hangars" to the cab? I was thinking of making a short nerf set but it looks like a long way with no support, about 20".

How about checking at a wrecking yard that deals in heavy trucks? I bet they have air tanks of all sizes off semi's, dump trucks, etc. , for reasonable prices.

Mike,

I have a Thomas Mil Spec 1/3hp compressor to feed the tank. If you click the photo in my posting above, it will take you to the air system details.

The Ram Line (not Dodge) nerf bars bolt to the frame (I used 1/2" SS bolts) and are very solid to stand on. They will not support the weight of the truck because the bolts are at the top of the fram mount brackets, which would bend upward if loaded with several thousand pounds from below.

I put Luvern bars on Sue's QC because she wanted flat step sections. The luvern bars bolt to the body mounts and use a drop rod from some holes in the cab frame. They support weight from above very well, but are less stout than mine when loaded from below.

I went to Brad Kilby's place and picked up a 2. 5 gallon "hot dog" air tank. Brad owns a '97 10 cyl 3500 and a Jeep with an on board welder and lots of other toys. He was anxious to see under the hood of my CTD and would like to see a 24 valve CTD in order to get a design for a compressor (engine driven). Any members fairly close to the Burbank airport with a 24 valve CTD would enjoy a visit to a real enthusiast. Statland, did Brad show you pictures of his truck after the accident (someone rear-ended him)... . its tough to look at. The V-10 brakets for the under hood should be done in a few weeks #ad

Jeff, Brad had a prototype on his 10 cyl, clean, but he wants to improve upon it. The guy is a perfectionist! There is plenty of room for tanks under the bed outside of the frame forward of the rear wheels.

The bed was sitting upsidedown on a trailer in front of the shop... . that lady did a number on it, looks like the left rear corner (I think) took most of it... . frame damage too! This really showed the importance of good solid battery mounting, as his shifted back quite a bit on impact.
