I was toying with the idea of adding a AIRAID setup from Geno's to my 97 12 valve since I took the silencer ring out but Im on the fence after scrolling thru the articles in issues 56 and 59 on the subject. Am I missing something here or would this probably be just a waste of cash?

Shop Around for the best price....

The best cold air intake IMHO is the "Icebox" Original Series.

Don't go w/ the "old school" oiled/Gauze filter. Spring for the Amsoil Nanofiber 4510 w/ pre-filter. I have an AFE Pro-Guard 7 w/ pre-filter that I used w/ the Icebox that you can have for free. The new dry filters flow as good as the old K & N type, but filter much better.

I totally disagree, I have had the oil type AFE big cone type air filter for over 250K with good oil samples. I tried the large Ams/Oil air filter with terrible results, the filter minder would pull down on just a freeway on ramp pulling the 5th wheel. I could not pull the Grapevine in third gear I had to shift into 2nd. I know it filters well but the airflow is terrible! I am a died in the wool AMZ/OIL ( original spelling ) user since the mid 70's, my Dad was the first dealer in Wa State so this not a hate Ams/Oil statement. If you are not towing and drive with a light foot they will do just fine.

Make sure you have enough air flow for your mods. I had an AFE stage 1 system and it had a big conical air filter with a box that sealed to the hood with a gasket and utilized the stock intake hose. Brady at industrial injection told me I was starving my truck for air. At the time I thought he was trying to sell me parts. Running out of things to try I ponied up the dough and bought an AFE stage II intake with sealed box, bigger conical filter and new intake hose. It reduced my egt's slightly but eliminated the surging from my turbo all together. Make sure whatever you buy whether it is AirRaid or Icebox that it will flow enough for your current or future mods

Thanks You for the heads-up. I was getting very low silicate levels w/ the AFE Pro-Guard 7. I may hold on to it.

i am not going to try and sway you at all as air intake setups are like ice cream, pick your flavor and enjoy.

For me there is only 1 air intake for our 2nd gen trucks and it is the AFE Stage 2 equipped with the Inverted Top(or Mega-Cannon as it was once called)filter. You could never sell me on anything else and never convince me that a stock sized intake tubed air box would out flow it or out perform it. Best intake system for our trucks ever made IMO and AFE did their homework well on it when they designed it... ..... Andy

Hammer

That is exactly what I have and going without cleaning it for 2 years and about 60k I never pulled the filter minder down. They flow a lot of air. I pull a 32. 5' 5er and have 300 rwhp and 750 tq on the dyno. Read my above post.

I am not sure how a air intake test for a 3rd gen relates to a 2nd gen owner but it was something to read. The 3rd gen trucks and a much less restrictive factory air intake system than the 2nd gen rides and almost anything will outflow and outperform it.

I took all the ones that I had here at one time to my local dyno shop when I was doing some testing to try and find the one that I liked the best and search for any differences. At the time I had a AEM Workhorse with their dry filter,AFE Stages 1 & 2,K&N,S&B and the TDR Favorite BHAF/Mallory Mount. In order of performance back then was the 1-AFE Stage 2,2-AFE Stage 1(I also had their newly design torque tube which had just came out back then),3-the BHAF/Mallory Mount,4-K&N system,5-S & B,6-AEM Workhorse. There was a 12hp difference from best to worst and 7hp difference from the AFE Stage 2 to the AFE Stage 1. That day I was very impressed with the old TDR favorite BHAF/Mallory mount as it was only off 8hp when ran in the same conditions as the AFE. The absolute worst was the AEM Workhorse and that was a shame to me as it was the best looking but at 18hp less than the AFE it was sent down the road to a new owner.

I ended up with the AFE Stage 2 and now have almost 200k on the intake system and two filters I have. All of my other systems were sent to new owners at various shows I went to that year and the only other one I kept was my BHAF/Stainless Mallory Mount and that was because it was one of my first mods after joining the TDR.

As for how underhood heat affects the air intakes there was a very extensive test done by Gary with real world towing data that showed little or no difference in intake air temps while moving and only slight increases when sitting at a traffic light. IMO after seeing his post way back when it convinced me that there is enough air flow to not even make this a area that should worry anyone, unless you have a compromised charge air system.

So,until S&B or AirRaid can show me strapped on my local dyno that their intakes/air filters can out perform my old trusty AFE Stage 2,I will keep using it and plugging the product as it really is IMO the best for our truck available. For those who require a "Dry" filter for the intake I use, that is also available... ... Just My . 02 worth... ..... Andy
