Got a question fellas,
I had a little Airhead Attack today when I went out to put the windows down on my truck. I forgot and left the key in the run position for about 6 hours. Needless to say, when I went to roll them up, I discovered what I had done. I turned it to off and back on to start it and it started just fine. Other than the radio playing for 6 hours yea, it was turned way down, did it harm anything? Would the grid heater have only cycled once when I first turned it on and when I didn't start it, it just sat there and played the radio the rest of the afternoon?
I bet I'll do the little trick that some of you have done so I can work the windows without the key!

What trick to make the windows work without the key? I would love to know where to wire that setup. I hate always fumbling for the keys when the truck is off.

I have never done that... ... . Yeah sure!
Do the window fix!

EMD, The "Window Fix" Has been done several ways. My way was to "Borrow" the Power seat feed while the left map light is on. uses one relay and takes about an hour to do.

I know, I know Rich,... ... . this would not have happpened if I had followed thru with the instructions you sent me but,... ... . I've been Busy, Busy, Busy,... ... well not really.

EMDDIESEL, here's the email Rich sent me with the neat way he did his truck. >>>>>>

I wanted to have the windows operate with the key off. I always seem to "hop" out with the windows down, or leave the wife without the key!
So what I did was tap a wire to the left overhead courtesy lamp and feed a Bosch 071 relay. (a common automotive relay used for alarms & such)
The relay was tucked inside and aft of the fuse door on left side of the dash. In this fuse panel is where the window circuit breaker and the power seat breakers are located. The window circuit is switched by the key. The seat circuit is hot all the time.
The trick is to manufacture some small jumpers using Small male and female spade connectors to access the two circuits. One jumper is the "tee" tap to the load side of seat circuit for alternate source to n/o relay contact
One jumper is the to the load side of the window circuit breaker to n/c relay contact
two jumpers allow the circuit breakers to lifted away from the fuse block
the last jumper connects the common side of the relay back to the load side of the window breakers position to feed the window themselves.
A small amount of filing on side of male spades is needed to allow them to enter the fuse block, maybe . 050" removed?
Look at the breakers and their male contacts that enter the fuse block

The normally (n/c) contact is connected to the window feed via the key.
The alternate window feed is from the seat circuit which is always hot goes to the normally open (n/o).
The coil of the relay goes to the map light (two wires + &-) Bare the wires at the lamp socket, solder & tape.

So whenever the "map" light is on the windows work!
If you open the doors, disarm the alarm remotely or manually turn on the left map light the windows work!

COOL HUH. .

Now I just got to get off my procrastinating butt and do it!

Thanks again Rich.

I cannot think of any damage (besides your pride) down with this dastardly deed.
No electric fuel pump.
No ignition system.
The fuel shutoff solenoid doesn't know the difference between standing in you driveway and cruising down the parkway. (Love that twist on words!)

If the only current was your radio and no daytime running lights or something else the batteries should be fine, too.

I personally want the windows live and the seat on ignition. I always manage to catch the power seat buttons when leaning inside to grab stuff.

Cheers;
JohnE

Some things I've always wondered about. Owners manuals always say to only adjust the seat when the vehicle is stopped, seems like it should only work when the rig is off. What do you do to escape a drowning car and the doors won't open, hope the key is in the right position? I would have rather had crank style windows on my rig if they were available.

RATTLINRAM,

No damage to the intake heater with leaving the key on, this circuit is timed. If you leave the key in the on position for more than two minutes, without starting the engine, you must turn the key off and then back to on, to power the intake heater again.

Bill - guess you need one of those 'escape' hammers if you have electric windows and think you might try driving under water #ad

.

Hard to swing a hammer under water. A spring-loaded ("one-handed") center punch works much better.

JohnE & BigDaddy,
Thanks for the good news. I was thinking it probably worked that way. I normally don't leave keys in anything but the truck was parked in the yard while I was cutting a 75' pine tree down beside the driveway to make room for a double-wide carport. RATTLINRAM'S new home

ducman,
Maybe GreatWhite Rich can post a wiring diagram for us since I think he plays with this electrical kind of stuff and sometimes it easier to just look at the picture. #ad

How about it Rich?

Drawing is AVAILABLE. File is in paint format and is 2+Mb. Post your request... Maybe someone more computer literate than I knows how to post it somewhere where everyone can see it??? Please!

Send it to me and I will serve it up for you. Make sure you give me your full name so I can stamp it on the drawing (assuming you want credit for your work).

As to escaping from my Ram underwater, if I can't just drive the mighty cummins out, I figure the sliding window will work.

just out of curiosity, how deep has anyone actually driven their truck into water, I know some guys who have done stream crossing but how deep could you really go before water in something became an issue?

No, it's not my truck. Aparently the guy was able to drive it out on it's own power.
