Someone on RV.net wrote that the Aisin transmission was developed along side the Ally. Now I know they weren't designed together but is there any relationship at all between them?

The news article doesn't specify what type of joint venture. It could have been only a marketing/sales joint venture making it easier for Allison to enter the Japanese market through an established manufacturer.

I don't believe the transmissions themselves were designed together at all. The Allison was a new design specifically for pickups and according to the web, has design flaws such as 3rd getting lube only when in third, and clutch packs getting pressure/lube at an angle instead of straight on. There isn't much info easily available on the Aisin 68 or the new 69, but the Chrysler warranty guy has noted no flaws or problems with them. When I was considering an automatic <gasp> for my 2013 purchase, after 17 years of manual transmisions behind my diesel Rams, he said the Aisin doesn't break. It is even hard to find out the weight of the Aisin but it seems to be around 375 lb, vs. around 225 for the 68RFE.

I have spoke to two reps form AISIN on the phone both very kind but could not answer my questions,,,, The one they did answer was the 69 can support 425hp @ 1200lbs TQ,

Awesome, I plan to leave this truck stock, but it's nice to know that there is that much extra capacity left which means that it should be a durable transmission. This would be why it has a 290,000km/3 year warrantee. The only guys that are going to put that many km's on in three years are couriers who will be working these things and be a real test for them. If Ram will give it that coverage, then they obviously have confidence in it.

Too bad they didn't have the new Aisin 69, which is significantly beefed up compared to the 68 that was used in chassis cabs before 2013.

O that was the other question they answered ,In MY Opinion this is the trans WE have been waiting for 17 Years....I wonder WHO made the final decision on the Aisin/Allison or house build? Who ever did it was the BEST decision made at this corporation RAM/DC/Chrysler date's back to Cummins. Once We start tearing this Trans down we will find factory triple discs TC, with some robust hardware and clutches.

I think we are under estimating the 68RFE. It has been in service since '07 and yes the power has been increased, but I have not read of large amounts of transmission failures, even with the 350/800 engines.

The new 385/850 engines now have a transmission behind them that have been "fail proof" and should provide excellent service.

On a different forum, I have talked with a engineer in the plant that makes the 68RFE am I am convinced that for my use of my 2012 towing my 14'5K trailer it will be just fine. For those of you that need to tow 30K, you now have something that will do that. I just do not need that much capacity.
