Found out today from the service manager at the local dealership that these new Aisin's do not like to be bumped into neutral while still rolling. He said he just came back from a training session and they firmly stated that you must NOT shift while the wheels are still turning. I have done this and got a TCM code twice. The R-N-D indicators turn orange and the transmission goes into limp mode in fourth gear and high line pressures and is painfully firm when shifting in and out of gear. Having been through this twice now, if it happens to you, just shut off the truck and start it again and it will be normal again and the engine light will go off after a half dozen or so restarts. So I've got to break the habit of bumping it into neutral before being completely stopped.

Newbie question - but why would you want to do that? I know in a rental you can shift from reverse to forward and vice versa at any speed, but that's under the Special Rules For Rentals, like being able to rock-hop on forestry trails without sump guards. With our own trucks, as with any heavy duty bit of kit, wouldn't it make sense to 'baby' it a bit, and let all the machinery's rotation in one direction finish before engaging either neutral or drive in the opposite direction?

Lots of "habits" developed on LD trucks get exposed when real HD components are used. That one is not partuclarly bad, but, not a good by a long shot. Operator relearning takes longer than doing it the same old way. ;)

If you spent any time plowing snow you would understand.

Haha! OK. Rest assured I don't spend much time plowing snow. It does snow occasionally in Western Australia ... maybe a millimetre or maybe even two, on the very top of a very small range of hills in the far south, once a decade or so!

But sand ... you want sand, we got sand ...

MPaulson, do you happen to know which fault code(s) were set? Merely shifting to Neutral while rolling should NOT (as far as I know) set any faults.

I have Aisin. On the farm, I bump it into neutral quite often, when trying to go slow, so do not have to ride the brake. So far, no problems at all. 20,000 miles.

OK, I have a steep Drive way, in the mornings I shift form P to N so I can roll down the driveway and when moving I go to D, no problems nice and smooth, Now if I back into Driveway and shift form R to N and roll forward and then to R, if I don't come to a complete stop and wait before I shift to R BANG. I am always backing trailers into My driveway so rolling forward to the correct spot takes a couple of shots to get it perfect. I go form D to N when rolling all the time No problems so far ,BOY go form R to N then roll forward back to R Bang, I completely stop before going to Back to R, and I mean stop and wait before R. trucks are 13/14 3500 with Aisin.
