Difference between 2017 and 2018 2500 laramie?

Have had my 2017 3500 for about two weeks.

Just backed out of the driveway and when I shifted to "D" it felt like I was rear-ended by someone the Aisin engagement was so hard. Shifting back-and-forth from "D" to "N" to "D" (while truck was stationary in the street) resulted in same hard-shift. Check-engine-light is displayed.

Shut down truck and restarted. Shifting was back to normal...very smooth as usual.

Check-engine-light is still displayed on dash cluster.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like it went into limp mode so the shifts are manual and harsh. Need to look at the stored codes to get an idea of what may have happened.

I have noticed that my 2017 Aisin does this as well if I am not at a complete stop when shifting or the brake pedal is not firmly pressed down.

After driving a manual Cummins since 94, this was by far the biggest learning curve for me. Actually stopping to shift gears. Oh and not searching for the clutch pedal with my left foot.

For those with Aisin who have experienced this hard-shift before (when shifting from N>D before coming to a complete stop with brake pedal fully depressed)...

Did it cause your check-engine-light (CEL) to come on? If so, what code did you pull?

I'm heading to dealer today to scan the CEL.

Thanks,
Dave

Well CEL is no longer on so I guess the code will remain a mystery. Bummer...

One should ALWAYS be stopped when changing gears. I always pop my trans in neutral before going F to R or R to F. Learned from my built DDT trans.

Now I know. I wasn't trying to shift when I was obviously rolling backwards... the transmission gears may have been slightly moving while my truck felt like it was stopped.

Active DTCs

Stored code should be there.

Just got back from dealer. Here are active DTCs:

ECU ... DTC ... DESCRIPTION
----------------------------------------------------------------------
TCM ... P070600 ... Transmission Range Sensor Performance

ABS ... U040200 ... Implausible Data Received From TCM-

DTCM ... U0402 ... Implausible Data Received From TCM

PTS ... U040100 ... Implausible Data Received From ECM/PCM-

Any thoughts?

Many thanks!

In got the same symptoms after my last transmission filter change. The trans sensed a low pressure condition for the first start. CEL and limp mode also. Shut down and restart problem gone. Several key cycles later and the CEL went away. No problems sence then. That's 4500 miles ago.

From a web search, P0706 signifies a bad signal from the transmission range sensor. Your restart likely reset the TCM sufficiently to cure it, but if it happens again, the sensor probably needs to be checked and replaced if necessary.

Well the TCM "Limp Mode" issue occurred again today while driving slowly in a parking lot. All "letters" (P-R-N-D) went to yellow and shifting into P (park) was very rough. Shutting down and restarting cleared it (but of course had the CEL). Then it happened again in my parking space but this time shutting down and restarting did not clear the "Limp Mode" (i.e., all letters remained yellow and shifting into D or R was very rough). Finally, a third shutdown-restart attempt cleared it and all letters were white and when shifted from P to R the shift was normal and smooth and the R was red in color; and when shifted from R to N and then D those letters were white (all normal).

I have an appointment at dealer service department to hopefully have this fixed. Taking the boys camping Friday so expect it will be a miracle if I get the truck back in order to tow the travel trailer. :/

Oh...I found a dead squirrel in the bottom part of my radiator fan shroud. That was a joy to remove (God help me the smell was bad). Maybe this critter got to some wiring? Or maybe just bad luck?

Yes! The squirrels are to remain inside the bell housing for the Aisin to function correctly. It is no different than the same issues caused by gerbils dying in the 68rfe. Easy fix though. Photos will help determine the breed of squirrel and no a gerbil can not be substituted.
On a side note we have been fighting squirrel and raccoon damage all year. They are both very destructive.

Just a thought, have your batteries load tested. Every time I have had one of my batteries die, I get different things acting weird. The radio first, then the transmission starts getting stupid. I just replaced my batteries and all is acting as it should. My 08 and 10 did this and my 14 just went through it.

Truck is at dealer now but I'll ask them to check batteries. Thanks for the tip! -Dave
