I just hit 30,000 miles and am going to change the transmission fluid. Does anyone know if there is a sealing washer on the drain plug and if there is a torque spec on the drain plug. This is on my 14 with the Aisin transmission. thanks

There is a gasket / washer on the drain plug.

I have re-used mine without any issues or leaks. Not sure what the torque spec is on the drain plug.......You will need a 19mm six point socket for removal. I simply snugged mine up.....using common sense.
You'll need 8 quarts of fluid.....the service fill on a hot drain is 7.2 quarts of either MOPAR ASRC fluid or Mobil 3309 ATF.
The gasket part number is 68085955AA if you opt to buy one....they're $6 from Geno's.

12V98, I assume you are refering to draining the torque converter, How do we drain this?? We can also drain the lines and coolers, I think that is easy enough if one thinks about it.

I did a complete fluid exchange on my 11 HO by popping apart one of the cooler lines up high by the radiator on the drivers side. Attached a hose to the push side placed hose in bucket that had volume lines on it. After draining the pan and replacing the exact amount that came out of the pan so the trans was "FULL" again. I would then have someone start the truck and as soon as the fluid coming out started to sputter stop the engine. Refill with the exact amount just removed. Repeat until you see the fluid color change. Know what the total capacity is so you can keep an eye on the volume removed , the color will change instantly.

By replacing with the exact amount each time you will be full when complete.

I don't know if the hose connections are similar on the new truck but I am sure it won't be hard to find a suitable location.

IMHO if you are going to spend the time replace ALL the fluid.

Yes it "ANNOYS" me to do half a job. :D

If ONLY removing the plug you need to raise the front of vehicle othewise you are going to leave 1 QT in the pan. I just remove My 69 Pan for the 2nd time Its much easier, if possible to remove the 3 16mm bolts and raise the trans 1.75" to remove the rear pan bolts, the 1st time I did it W/O raising the trans, removing the 3 middle bolts was a PITR and putting them back in was X2 PITR..

Well......it does meet warranty requirements. The subsequent next service (with filter change) does change more fluid than the drain & fill.

For me.....I'll follow TransEngineer's direction and not CHANCE running it dry....
So the net effect is, you are just draining the pan through the cooler line (which, if you run it dry, is NOT a good thing).

sounds good, thanks for the help!

I am just over 31k on the odometer. Does this mean I need to change mine as well? Seems too soon to be changing the fluid.

You will only be doing a pan drain at that mileage from what I understand. That's if you believe in partly changing fluids.

That's if you believe in partly changing fluids.

In this case, I "believe" in what the manufacturer recommends. They could recommend a full change and they and the dealer stand to make more money from it, but they don't, because its not necessary, and they are a good honest folks. ;)

As I said last time, it doesn't degrade and get contaminated like engine oil. You're in an engine oil frame of mind. What about diff's then you say? Still, not the same type of wear going on. There is nowhere near the type of load on the gears and bearings within an auto trans as with a diff. If there was, they wouldn't be able to use such a light lubricant.

I like dropping the pan to see how much clutch dust , both times I dropped My pan, although there was dust on the pan and VB it was nothing alarming to worry about. I do think you should drop it early to verify what's up. I have found parts laying in pans. If its under warranty documentation a good thing.

It's in the owners manual.........

Sam

My manual says "Change automatic transmission fluid (AS69RC transmission only)". Schedule is every 30K. Where does it say change the pan only? Later it says to change filter or filters at 120K.

So is it pan only at 30,60,90 and then pan with filter at 120K? Seems like a lot of time on a filter if so.

In my 2014 diesel supplement maint schedule, starting page 335 (don't have my 2016 books yet, your 2015 book page numbers should be close) fluid change every 30,000 miles, filter change every 60,000 miles. It just says "change it" which is definitely subject to interpretation as to what that means, pan drain only or complete inc. torque converter. Maybe a tech can shed some light on what "change it" actually means.

This................

I don't have a 2015 manual yet, but I know that both my 86 and 2000 FSMs both described the "partial" oil change method.
I would think that if they've had been specifying a particular change procedure for a few decades, that if the suddenly changed their definition of it, they be pretty specific about it. I've seen several examples in their manuals where they essentially point out that a particular procedure is not done the way it used to be.

I was actually quoting from 2015 users guide what I would consider a owners manual. Page273 under "Maintaining Your Vehicle"

If I were to take this literally I see "change" ATF every 30K. There is no mention about filter/filters until lower then it's at 120K.

So from that I would expect they wan the FLUID CHANGED not just part of it and filter is not needed to be changed until 120K.

There is a section about the 68RFE that wants fluid filter changed at 60K but that is clear it's only if towing etc and ONLY for 68RFE.
