You could just as logically say your diff failed because the axle housing was painted black....and then tell everyone else that black axle housings cause ring and pinion failures.

OH Krap! I took a rattle can and painted a lot of bare metal black under my truck including the diffs.

Should I paint mine??? Big question is flat, satin or semi gloss???????

Just convince someone else the 3:42 is OK. You can post all the positive info you want, and it won't convince me. If the capability with 3:42 is 30K, then with 4:10 its 35K. I wont be buying a truck soon anyway so its a mute point. I don't care why my 3:42 failed, just know it did, and the whole housing, and related parts had to be rebuilt. I don't understand why they rebuilt it vrs replace the assembly, but IT DID FAIL. This will be my last post on this subject.

The capacity of 3.42 is not 30k. It is rated about 10k less than 4.10.

Why was I able to tow 28-29K combined West Coast with my measly 350/800 HO Dually with 3.42's??? Because in reality it was a 4.10 in 5th.

New 385/900 with AISIN and 3.42's is a serious towing machine per RAM up to 28-29K range.

If my RV was 5K lighter I would be running 3.42's for sure. Also I would be getting 14-15 running around instead of 12-13mpg.

RAM does not rate a 3.42 at 29k.

12V , I think your understanding of your statement that your 5th gear is like a 4.10. That is totally wrong. Every gear you have 1st-6th with 4.10 gearing will wind up your engine RPM faster than the 6 gears with 3.42s or 3.73s. No gear you are in will give you the performance of a 4.10.

Travelled on I-90 west of Butte, MT. Look close at photos. I slowed to 30mpg and in second and third gear grossing 27.5k. Extremely the longest and steepest grade I have toad. Would love to see a new model RAM with 27.5k load and 3.42s a not get down into 2nd gear. Notice heat guage. If I would have another 1/2 mile to pull I think it would have overheated.

I agree. With the 4.10 and the Aisin in 6th gear the overall ratio is 2.58, with the 3.42's and the Aisin in 5th the overall ratio is 2.63, so very close, BUT NOT IN THE LOWER GEARS

Ugh.....people will argue these details all day long. It's really quite simple folks.

3.42's tow within their limits really darn good...better than most expect.
3.73's will tow slightly better, with a nearly unnoticeable mileage penalty in some circumstances
4.10's will tow the best of all three....with likely an unnoticeable mileage decrease when compared to 3.73's but more so 3.42's.

The more weight you tow, the more likely you won't notice a mileage difference between ratios....but unloaded you will.

UH yes they do and most likely more with the 2017's. I did say combined!!! Above chart says 29,300#
combined.

12V you are reading that chart wrong. That is total of RV and your truck. The total of RV or fifth wheel toad is 20,520#s. Truck with 4.10 gears is 29k-30k for the RV or fifth wheel. Big difference.

He said combined. As is truck and trailer.

He has been referring to the GCWR rating ("combined") all along.

12V sorry for my misunderstanding. When you get it out west on a 4 mile long 8-9% grade keep us informed as to the performance.
