Had a 2013 3500 DRW with 68RFE, now have a 2015 3500 DRW with the Aisin.
The 68fre (3.42 rear gear) exploded at 18,000 miles while towing a 16k lbs filth wheel. Dealer would not replace, only rebuild.
The 2015 (3.73 rear gear) with Aisin shifts dramatically different. 1st gear is a much lower ratio. It down shifts when slowing down where the 68rfe did not unless in tow/haul mode. The shifts are much more positive with a much quicker lockup.
Just my 2 cents and personal experience......

Thanks for the info fellas. After driving both autos I do like the Aisin more. It's hard to not want another G56 as mine has been flawless except for replacing the clutch around 170K miles. Still might do another. Still searching for what I like.

Excellent information though. All the input is very much appreciated.

I would caution you not to make the same mistake I did. When you test drive the trucks, make certain you do not have the dead pedal or hesitation from a stop or in kicking down. Not all trucks have that but mine has done so since new and has had the updates which did not solve it. Takes 3 seconds to kick down from 6th and drives you crazy trying to maintain a constant speed on rolling hills. It's fresh in mind because I just returned from a trip to Los Angeles. About got run over down there except no one wanted to take on the size of this truck. At the dealership, I drove two trucks like equipped and one (mine) had the hesitation (like a turbo lag) and the other did not. I wrongly thought that it would be a simple fix.

I don't know if it's an Aison problem or engine but it's really annoying and there does not seem to be a fix. Otherwise, a great truck.

Mine did that in LA traffic yesterday, my remedy was to pick 4th as the highest gear to keep up RPM's and it also down shifted with T/H on a lot easier.

Again, great information on the transmissions. I am glad you mentioned the trucks with the dead pedal. I believe I felt that same exact thing in one of the trucks I drove. Didn't think too much of it, but it's good to be aware of the problem.

I am thinking if I get a new truck, it will be an Aisin or another G56. I know some had troubles with the G56, but mine has been excellent and with 3.42's and the lower 6th gear I believe a newer one would be better. My truck would probably be a consistent over 20MPG truck if I didn't turn quite so many RPM's at 70MPH. My truck does much better the slower I go, but I run 600 miles a week on I95 so running much slower than 70 is pretty tough.

I did like what I saw with the Aisin at 70MPH. Looked to be a touch over 1500 RPM's. I don't have any worries about knocking it down to 5th while towing to keep it around 2000 or so.

Still reading, looking at every truck I can and driving them as I can. Haven't had an automatic in a long time, so I am trying to get a good feel if I will like it in 5 years.

The only thing I'll miss about driving the old NV5600 is the expression on the valet drivers face when I hand him the keys and he realizes it's a manual transmission that he doesn't know how to operate.

Even better when they can't find reverse and it's still parked out front when I come out.

You guys are brave if you would actually hand over your keys. I myself would never hand over my keys to some smart car driving type to park my dually. I won't even let a gas jockey fill my truck.

No way would I be driving that truck as a daily driver commuting back and forth up to the DC area. (smile)

Well, it isn't so much up to DC, but it gets a weekly road trip from Camp Lejeune to Fredericksburg Va.. Had a little Subaru, but it got totaled a little while back, so its the trucks job now..

You would in Oregon!!! SNOKING

True, I seem to remember that from 2 years ago when I did the coast drive. That ****** me off. What a load of bull. What, do they think that some lunatic is going to spray gas all over the station and light it? Or is this just the governmental idea of creating jobs? (and yes, I said "governmental" on purpose.)

It has been that way for LONG TIME, we try to get it changed, has to go to the public for a vote, and it looses every time. It is getting closer each time thought. A lot of people are afraid that they would have to get out of there cars to pump there gas is what keeps it from passing. It only for FLAMIBLE liquids, Diesel is a combustible so it is legal to pump your own, but it is up to the station owner, if they don't want you to they don't HAVE to let you pump diesel.

You can't pump your own gas in Oregon?? That's even more anal than California......:-laf

Yeah, but Oregon has the best roads in the West, maybe the country! California is trying to match up with the bad road leaders back East! SNOKING

I don't know about the Aisin, but my 2014 68rfe 3:42 equiped truck shudders and pings at 1000/1100 RPM in 6th when cruising 45MPH in the city, then accelerating when the speed limit increases to 50/55MPH. I like to run T/H due to this, which keeps the RPM's up when cruising at the slower speeds.

Why would you not manually shift down to 5th gear in slow traffic??

Plus the speeds on the freeways at 70+ mph allows you to stay in sixth when in T/H. I don't know at what speed it changes from 5th only to 6th but it's better in T/H. I'm tracking mileage between the different options. Drive only / Drive with EB / Drive TH with EB are what I'm tracking at every fill up. When I use the highest gear selection is only for special purposes @ going down steep grades allowing better EB use to keep speed in range I want.

I made a few trips thru there. Think it's bad in a vehicle, try it on a motorcycle, running tank over, dragging nozzle across my tank bunch of knuckle heads. I started refusing to let them do it so they would just stand there and watch. Liberals have taken over Oregon.
