Ratio change

You guys running '03 and '04 3. 73 ratios will drop to 3. 44 if you switch your OEM 17s to 265 x 70 x 19. 5. Great for solo fuel mileage but there'll be some loss in oomph if you're pulling something big. You'll also stay in 5th gear a lot until you hit 70 mph or so on the highway.

I couldn't have said it better myself. 5th (direct) is the strongest gear in the transmission. That's the one I want to tow in (actually 4th in mine but it's a 5 speed). How many times have you wished you had a higher gear? Yes there will be a little more lag getting things rolling but with a box on an 03-04 it will put down 800 ft. lbs. of torque. I see that as enough to get you rolling. I look forward to driving 75mph at 2100 rpm.

SRadke you're right on, I'd like mine geared to tow in 5th where 65-68mph is in the 2200 rpm range. I think that would be a good RPM at that speed to tow at.

I need to look up the Excel spreadsheet someone posted to see what ratio is needed to run 68mph @ 2200 in 5th.

Actually, the TST box at 9 x 9 gives 1000 lbs ft of Tq:--)

And make that 2000 rpm at 75 mph w/34" tires! :)

Well I punched in 265/70/19. 5" into Klenger's chart and came up with 68mph = 2500 RPM :( There is quite a jump between 5th and 6th on the NV5600.

If I were to gear my truck my way I wanted, I would leave 1-5th gears alone, do a . 86 ratio in 6th, throw 3. 30 gears in the back and run Rickson's 265/70/19. 5. That would give you:

2200rpm in 5th = 68mph,

2000rpm in 6th = 71mph (2200 in 6th= 79)

This would give you a great tow machine in 5th gear, decent ratio splits through the lower gears, and still be a freeway flyer.

Yes but that will yield really high egt's with the stock turbo. The average person will be more in the 800 range.

Vaughn, you'll be into some big tires to make that happen but I like the idea. I prefer to stay in the 60 range when loaded up over 20k. These fantastic brakes are not magic after all.

I was looking at the chart again with my "ideal" gearing and mind, with the thought of pulling a grade with a load.

Let's say we go charging into a hill in 5th and the load pulls you down to 1700 rpm, which is 52 mph. Shift down to 4th at 52mph, and RPM jumps to only 2300, a nice RPM to pull hard with. So it looks like with this setup you could roll along nicely in 5th, get most of the hills without downshifting, but if you have to downshift to 4th it puts you at a nice RPM.

My 02 HO with Edge EZ and 245x19. 5's pulled the Columbia gorge heading west at 75mph with the BigFoot in 6th. I could use 7th most anytime. Without the Edge I pulled the gorge in 5th. The 3. 54's and Ricksons do 79mph at 2000 and 1600 in 7th (Gear Vendor). Love those low rpms. Mileage not to much different. Great peace and quiet. geusterman

Right! And when are the Rickson wheels and tires going to be available? They told me February but forgot to say which year.

Jeremiah quipped:

That why I intend on using 225s or 235s at the most. If I was rich and famous and could afford a 19. 5 setup that is. :(

Vaughn! What's this you're saying about downshifting!? We don't need no stinking downshifting! I'll drop out of over but it had better be one crooked road to get me lower than that. :p

The Rickson's are currently available for the new models if you want steel wheels. The aluminum ones they have pushed back to "late April". I've written several letters encouraging Alcoa to make something sooner so I can cancel my Rickson order.

Rickson has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars of business by complaining, "We gotta get this right, otherwise, we ain't sellin' nothing. " I can appreciate that position, but somewhere along the line they've got to put up or shut up.

Personally, I've had to buy a whole new set of tires because I couldn't wait on them any longer. Forget me as a customer for the next 40-50,000 miles. How do they stay in business with that philosophy?

19. 5's? Got bling?

Sounds totally gay to me. 17 is the biggest rim any 4x4 should get. Take your shyte wheeling somewhere other than the mall. lol

Rickson SAYS they have 'em. Only when you nail 'em down, they say, "Well, we don't have 'em right now but we hope to have 'em in February or March, but if not then perhaps in April or May.

"Or maybe it was April of May of next year. Or was it last year in April or May we thought we'd have 'em? Who knows when we'll have 'em? Go somewhere else and quit botherin' us. "

Oh, by the way, save your money 'cause when we do get 'em, whenever that is, it's gonna cost you a bundle 'CAUSE OUR WHEELS 'N' TIRES ARE BETTER 'N ANYBODY ELSE'S.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. I guess my Unimog 1500 is - to use your high school vernacular "gay"- since it has 20" wheels. I'm wondering how gay the 425/75/20 Michelin xm47 tires look compared to what you run on that Willys? If we were interested in bling bling we'd be talking about 18s or 20s which would be hundreds less than 19. 5s. But since some people here actually use their trucks they need some real, heterosexual wheels and tires. :rolleyes: :-{}

If I had to apply the term "gay" I would put it on 17 inch wheels not 19. 5's. The 17's don't look like truck tires, more like something off an oversized SUV. I want a 100,000 mile tire that doesn't go flat when you hit a 2x4 on the highway. If wheeling is what you desire other options would be better..... perhaps a rim with tire choices wider than 11. 5 inches.

Yeah I wish Rickson could get the ball rolling faster, but I saw a Chevy HD DMax with a set of the aluminum Eliminator wheels and man did they look GOOD. I tried catching up to the guy but got cut off at a light. I'm not pushing or defending Rickson but when they finally get those wheels coming I think they'll be worth the wait. But then the Alcoas in the TDR mag writeup by Bill Swails "Earthroamer" looked good considering it was a small B&W shot.

Speaking of which where was our "EarthRoamer" writeup this time, hmmm? Bill musta been too busy trying to keep his 6L PStroke on the road
