Has anyone bought them recently? I've been calling around & there is no stock with huge lead times.

I don't know about the current availablity of the M/T Alcoa wheels however, I wouldn't trade my Challengers for any other wheel on the market! Weld wheels look nice although, they are a two piece wheel (two separate hydraformed aluminum halves fusion welded together) whereas, the M/T Alcoa's are forged, one piece wheels. Even though Weld Racing advertises slightly higher load rating specs. than the M/Ts, the M/Ts are by far the strongest aluminum wheel on the market!

You're right about the two-piece Weld Wheels. My experience with them was a joke.
I bought a set of Weld Super Singles, Roadhawk style 8". No weight in the truck except two tool boxes with a few tools in them. I had the wheels on for about a week when I started to hear this 'popping' and 'cracking' sound... kinda like Rice Krispies amplified about ten times... any way, it was the wheels!! The guy who sold me them could'nt believe it. The two-piece weld was flexing the wheel, especially when the truck turned, and the two pieces were tapping each other and making the noise. It got to be unbearable. This experience can be a long story... all told, I tried 14 new Weld wheels, all the exact same style as above, two left me with flat tires (aluminum cracked) and every set made the noise. Weld would'nt do a thing about the problem,no compensation, no nothin. ' I think they suck. The wheels look nice, but after what I went through, I would never recommend them.

I had the 16"x7" Alcoa LTS on the 95, no complaints & it looked good, with maintenance. I want to go to a wider wheel. The Mickey Thompson Alcoa is 8. 5" wide - that'll do.

Thanks for the heads up on the Weld. Wouldn't that just be great, the 5th Wheel on the back & a flat, out in the middle of no-where, with no puncture! You're right, I'll stick to the 1 piece, HD wheel.

I agree with John. I have had my Challengers for about 3 years now and I love them. A while back I read in a 4X4 magazine (don't remember which one) that TUV in San Diego tested these rims and found them to be stronger than any other 16" wheel they ever tested, both steel and aluminum. Although only rated at 3,000lbs, I think there is a good safety margine here.
Alcoa makes a three part cleaner, polish, and preserver kit that really works well on aluminum rims. It lasts longer than any other method I have ever tried. One application keeps the rims looking like brand new for a year or more (and my dog pees on them whenever I go somewhere and don't take him). The rims are over 3 years old and look like I just bought them. I have only had to use the kit one time so far, although I am about ready to use it for the second time.
I have a friend that just got a set of Challengers from Americas Tire Store. He ordered them and they came in in about 2 days. It sounds like they may have had them in their warehouse or a local distributor they use had them in stock. Americas Tire Stores are chain in a number of the western states.

I just ordered a set yesterday. They told me there is a 6-8 lead time, but they found another source that can have them in two weeks. They said this other source is not that reliable and not to get my hopes up. I ordered those wheels and some Goodyear ATS 305/70-16's. Ordered them form Wheel Works for 155. 00 per wheel plus 139. 00 per tire. They have one of those fancy balancers that balances with a dynamic load so hopefully I won't have any problems with the tires like another member posted. I decided on the Alcoa as they are machined from a single piece of hot forged alloy. I looked at the Weld wheels and they look nice, but they are two piece and have some huge welds on the back side that I could see from the front, I'm not sure if that would effect the balance as well. Let me know if you find a place that has them in stock.

Watch out for the 16x7 Alcoa forged aluminum LTS (5-SPOKE STAR DESIGN) wheels. I e-mailed a gentleman in Oregon from the old CDW BB who had a set that developed cracks when used at the rear axle location after hauling his camper (GAVW specs. were NOT exceeded). These were replaced under warranty but, they too, also developed cracks. A good friend of his had an identical Ram to his (except for transmission), carrying a slightly heavier camper (still within GAVW specs. ) that also developed cracks in the rear (Alcoa LTS) wheels. If I remember correctly, both trucks were '97 2500 CC 4x4s with 285/75R16D BFG Radial All-Terrains. The owner of the first Ram I spoke of ended up going with the Alcoa forged aluminum 16x7 wheels that look very similar to the M/T Alcoa 16x8 Classics. Although he doesn't like the looks of these wheels as well, no cracks have developed.

We sell alot of Alcoa wheels for the big rigs where I work. FYI Alcoa is on strike and does not anticipate shipping any product till summer of 2000. The only way you will get their product is if a supplier has it on their shelf.

I was told back in October that the Alcoas were extremely hard to come by. I elected to go with the Eagle Series 58. I'm very satisfied with them.
