Just Now dove in to modify my Oil vent which as you know is on the front... . on steep downhills, we lose a quart or 2 out the hose. .....

The solution is to make a vent on the valve cover like the N-14 Cummins has on the big truck I drive.

First I ground down the rear of the two raised bars to make a flat surface for the grommet.

Here are the parts I got at Auto Zone. The item on the left is a GM oil filler cap and it has a out tube but is hidden here... has a baffle and sponge that will keep any oil in on splashes. Part Number is #8075 The grommet on the Right is one of the "HELP!" items part # 42306 "oil filler tube grommet"... . and not shown but is in lower pics is 5' of crancase hose

#ad

Then I started drilling. first I drilled a small hole, making it bigger and bigger till I had 1 3/8" opening for the grommet.

Pic of it installed on the valve cover. I had to remove it to put the cover on the truck.

#ad

After I put the cover on, it was easy to put the grommet on then the breather on. it is right at the padding... just right..... attach a hose, route it down to the side of the engine at the engine mounts. and tied the end to the plate for the axle disconnect wih an angled cut on the hose so wind will draw the fumes out through venturi effect.

#ad

Then I had to block off the original hose so I found a plug and used a piece of the original hose to block off any oil to want to get out.

Ran the engine and no leaks and it vents just fine. now I can go out and go offroad with no worries.

Maybe you are on to something, but I know when our local chapter did the KDP fix on a couple of trucks and the original vent hose was blocked and under a few pounds of pressure, the side cover gaskets blew on the engine. These are supposably a PIA to replace.

That's too easy... there's gotta be something that can go wrong... if something doesn't go wrong then there is a design flaw... just tell everyone to KISS off:p

Keep us updated.

Good Idea

What size is the hose on this new vent? In the pic it look's 1/2 inch, ive seen that same kinda vent with 3/4 or one inch. I would hate to create oil leak's. Harv

Cant remember what size the Hose is, but it is smaller than the 3/4 Heater hose. It is labeled Crankcase hose and is some wierd size. There was 2 sizes, this was the bigger one.....

So far, it is breathing well, I feel air flow out the hose and no leaks. Havent done a steep hill yet, Might do that this weekend. .

I am confident this will work ok since the N-14 Cummins are like this.

Yes the front vent hose... . blosk it off and do the repair I did...

No haven't done it yet, Watched the Indy 500 today... .

Might try it later. I am going to my sisters tomorrow for her Bday. There is a spot I tried the steep hill one time. I have done some driving, freeway and streets and there is no oil residue on the end of the hose, seems like the oil drips will be less this way.

still haven't done a steep hill, will try to soon, I look at the hose and there is alot less oil on it in terms of wetness than the other place, I guess the filter on the top is doing it's job... .

I am in the process of getting things for buying a trailer. I am buying a 28' desert fox toybox. it has a 13,500 gvw and weighs 7400 total including the tounge dry. I am buying the hensley hitch and I just put in the Jacobs E-brake. works good!!

Took off the class 3 hitch and ordered a clas 5 rated for 14K with a WD hitch. Amazing they would put on a 3 on a 3/4 ton truck!!! anyone interrested in it? I amgonna buy a 18 gal. plastic tank to mount where the spare goes. $139 for it and some acc. like guage and hoses and the like..... better cost effectiveness... ...

goto www.westmarine.com and see part # 381939 for the tank... ... and for the guage, #105140 there are things called a deck plate fill, a cap and plate for the decks of boats but will work anywhere..... All total for this is $230 for me and I get 18 gallons more for towing.....

I was having problems with oil all over the front of the engine. About a month ago I had the dealer relocate the breather as per TSB 09-002-02.

Would it have been better to perform your solution over the TSB?

I had the breather TSB done also! seems like there is less oil drips and mist, there is still some!

I think that EricBu12's solution might be a little better at not producing as much oil mist and drips. having the vent at the top of the engine and a vertical exit seems like it should help reduce the amount in my thinking??

and not having the dealer working on your truck, and removing the Injection pump and fuel plumbing should eliminate any related problems that might happen from having the breather TSB done

either way gets the job done! my thinking is if all ya are doing is removing the valve cover opposed to the injection pump seems like should be less things to go wrong that way!

I am under the assumption that this is a crankcase breather if this is all it does relieve crankcase pressure than why don't we do what we do on the race car on our '68 dart we take the breather's out of the valve covers and you weld two fitting's in the exhaust the take some 3/4" hose and connect them so all this does is create a low pressure vacuum sounds like this would be the best way to go please correct me if I am wrong, or any reasons why this won't work Aaron

I was planing on pipeing it into my new 4 inch when I get it. Has any one done this? I would think it would burn and not make a mess.
