I agree, too much concern on this issue. Fleetguard directions (on new filter) tell you to precharge the filter with oil. Do it over and over as the media just sucks it up. It takes three or more shots until the level stabilizes. Once the media is soaked the amount of air space is small (perhaps 2 ounces). Not enough to be concerned about at start up. Based on what I'm seeing, the filter on my truck will be "half full" at every cold start but it is actually 7/8 or more full if you count the saturated media. One thing about loosening the filter while hot. This may make it easier to remove but breaking the seal stops the siphoning. Likely mess when you drop it down. I will say, it takes some oomph to get that cold filter moving. Next oil change I'll try backing backing it off hot just a bit, hopefully maintaining the seal, see what happens.
