With salt season coming I thought I would remind all who have the joy of living in the areas of salted roads to keep you baby protected!! Heres a few tips that I have seen work year after year. I did a post a while back on this but this is a reminder. For those of us who change our own oil you can use used oil and mix 50/50 with diesel or K-1 NO GAS!!! or waxoil will work just as good and squirt in the door bottoms ( I drilled a hole down low and put a plug in it to make it easy) take out the cab corner vents(the little black plastic things) and get some in there too. On the front fenders I go through where the factory air box intake from the fender was, if you look back there you may see some RUST!!!!!! Squirt em good. On the driver side there is an access between the cowl and the fender where the hood hinge folds. On the bed go through the center stake pockets and get some on the top of the wheel arch. Underneath use common sence on what to squirt. Anything with factory undercoating is usually a go. Before doing this so the EPA dosent come unglued when they see oil running out of your truck on the street, park it on a piece of plastic or be ready with some oil dry or rags, make sure to let it drip out good. Any oil on the paint can be wiped up with some wax and grease remover availabe at parts stores, this goes for the front bumper too, cause it WILL get on the plastic, but it comes off easy. Do a search on waxoil or waxoyl if you want to go that route. Itll work just as good. To spray the solution I use an old recargeable fire extinguisher, check at fire protection shops, and call around. Go together with some buddies who need it done, and buy one. Lots better than a rusty truck. Any question fire away, Ill try and answer them.

Not a new idea to me

Although I haven't done this yet I have seen a guy with an 87 chevy that was still in mint condition due to him always spraying the used oil all over the truck underside and all around under hood also he did this after every oil change so he used up the oil right away. Now the truck didn't look it's best like this because of dust sticking to the oil but there was NO rust anywhere and with only about 40k on the truck he figured it would be the last good truck he would buy, he had lots of (junk) vehicles bought used and was past due for this idea. He used a garden sprayer the kind you pump up time and time again.

I posted a couple of recipes for making your own Waxoyl a while back which I'll repost for the upcoming winter season:

Recipe #1

Take a ½ kilogram of paraffin wax or candle making wax and grind it up with a cheese grater. Soak it in 2 liters of mineral spirits/ Paraffin/ Kerosene/ lamp oil/ Diesel until all of the wax is dissolved. It might take a couple of weeks. Stirring will cause most of the wax to dissolve, but soaking should take care of the rest, heating the mixture in hot water (no open flames) will add in the quick dissolving of the wax. Generally try to dissolve as much wax as the mineral spirits/ kerosene/ paraffin/lamp oil/ Diesel will hold. Pour one liter of mineral oil/ non-detergent motor oil into the dissolved mixture. If the mixture is too thick for spraying you can thin it further with more mineral spirits until it is of a spray-able consistency.

Recipe #2

Here is a recipe for homemade "Waxoyl". It's an old fashioned rust treatment / undercoating:

2 1/2 quarts turpentine

12 oz. beeswax / candle wax

1 quart light machine oil

With a cheese shredder, cut the wax into the turpentine, stir until the wax has dissolved, (takes a long time; you can use very low heat (a warm room) to aid but be careful) and thin with the machine oil to a brushable / sprayable consistency. Apply liberally. You can use a hand spray bottle to get into closed-off sections if you have a small access hole.

Please be sensible when you make this stuff; don't go breathing the fumes or applying heat and burning down your house. If you have any doubts about it, err on the side of caution and just buy a commercially available product.

3 in 1, sort of , they have wax like to spray inside the doors, box beams etc. and thinner black stuff to underneath of truck, it's a good

stuff when done properly. My previous car was a -82 Buick wagon, which was protected with Tectyl. I sold it to my friend, it's now his daily driver and still quite rust free

Roadwarrior,

Diesel would work fine since it does soak into metal and evaporates slowly. I did the same thing to one of my gas truck, I got some looks at the filling station because of the stench :D Be careful inside the doors, the fumes com right up through the door panels. My girlfriend dosent like the smell, but she puts up with it since she dont wanna have to walk!!:p
