CB - I don't doubt your truck-abusing abilities, I've been reading your posts for awhile now :D

I too have a fair amount of experience with different trucks, different terrain, and different tire sizes. I've run everything from 44's down to 235's. I just stepped down as president of our local Toyota 4x4 rockcrawling club here in Colorado. Plenty of time in the mud and snow of northern Wisconsin.

Narrow tires have proved more useful to me overall. Certainly don't want to start a bickering match :-{} , to each his own. I know in your first post about the subject you made it clear this was your personal opinion and I just wanted to state mine

Sorry to have helped this thread get off-track

Alcoa's

I really love my Alcoa's but they are very expensive & the good 19. 5 tires are very expensive as well.

Mine were on the truck when I got it but I believe 6 wheels, 6 tires & adapters were over $4000!

Holy insano action batman!!! You rock crawler dudes are NUTS!!! You've got some hella beefy cahones to do that stuff!

I've been in some pretty seriouse situations a few times (almost changes my name from "truck killer" to "my-own-damn-self killer" )... but that's nuts. I've rolled two trucks (one end to end) so I know what it's like... to do that regularly is nuts!

I have a newfound respect for you! I think you're new nickname is... "The Cahone King"! :D

I'll take rocks over mud and snow any day... . :D (Click on the "My Pics" link in the sig and go to the Miner's Revenge album. ;)) I built the Jeep for rocks - between the 4. 88s and the 4:1 transfer case, I have ants passing me up on the trail. :D

Back on the subject of rims, I agree without whoever said to avoid clear coated wheels. They stain easily, the clear coat scratches and looks dull, and it is a nightmare to get them looking good again. Stick with a good polished wheel and keep a good coat of wax or sealer on it. :)

If I only had the $$$ for a set of Alcoas..... :(

Rock Crawler? Not me... this is just my daily driver truck.

I don't think the ol First Gen dually would fare so well climbing rocks!

I love the Alcoa's & they look great but really it's just a looks thing on a first gen... the steel wheels are more than strong enough so long as you can live with those silly 32" diameter tires!

The only tire I've ever seen on a first gen with 16" wheels that looked good where the Denman Coyotes but I hear they've discontinued them... sad:{

I've got a set of alcoa wheels on my '93 D350 -- love 'em. I do polish them a couple of times a year, usually in the spring and midsummer sometime. Here in Iowa they usually get a fair amount of abuse from the road chemicals and gravel roads, but nothing too hard to clean up.

On another note, I've seen John's V8 Toyota with the Michelin military tires -- pretty wild ride. BTW John, the blue Beast is doing just fine!

In Iowa mud and snow, the narrower tires seem to do better than wide, but when I was living out in Utah in that fluffy powder snow, the wide ones did just fine. Depend a lot on local conditions. Just my opinion. . .

Ah... . that brings up a very good point. Mud and snow out here is different than mid west snow. Our snow isn't near as heavy, and our mud is ussualy bentanite (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) wereas I think midwest mud has more clay and it's stickier...

I'm not sure about the mud part... but that is a good point.
