Ok guys. . after having 15w40 in my truck for about 6000 miles, I've noticed that I'm starting to get the Amsoil Leaking blues. As I was looking underneath my truck, the back side of my oil pan has residue on it showing where it has started leaking. Boy does it look nasty, I have oil residue all over my cooler lines and my transmission pan.

How are you guys curing this problem? Are you just swapping out the gasket on the oil pan?

Are you sure it is not blowing out of your blow by pill bottle? I would take it to a car wash and clean everything up and then recheck. If that does not work have the dealer check it with a die.

NAPA sells dyes that can be put in your oil without harming it. A cheap blacklight bulb from WalMart in a trouble light will give you enough UV light at night to trace where the leak is coming from.

The Eastwood Company www.eastwoodcompany.com also sells that dye, as well as a fancy (and expensive) black light.

I'm positive it is not my blow by bottle. I have relocated it and fixed that leaking problem.

I actually got underneath my truck and looked up at my oil pan to actually see the oil coming out of the back side of the pan. The oil is coming out on the side of the oil pan that is right next to the TC. Again... you can actually see oil where it is leaking out.

Based on your year truck it should be covered by the 5 year 100K warranty. I would call the dealer and make sure the have the seal and then take it in and have it fixed under warranty. Should not be hard for them to fix.

Don't feel like the lone ranger on this. I just checked my pan and mine is seeping oil at the drivers side rear. It's not enough to drip on the ground, but I like you don't like any leaks. Called the dealer and they said that it is covered under warranty and to bring it in and they would put a new gasket on. Since I just changed the oil 1000 miles ago I told thenm I would have them fix it in 3000 miles. That was fine with them. It is not a big problem but I will have them fix it. This could be where my quart of oil is going every 5000 miles :)

I'm guessing not.

I checked the warranty book and it states that it does. I also talked to the Service manager at my dealership and he said it is covered under the 5 year 100K mile warranty. I have a great Dealership, but i am also a Dealers worst nightmare, a retired guy with nothing but time on their hands and a 5 year 100k mile engine warranty and a 5 year 100k mile diesel wrap warranty for the remainder of the truck :D I am sure that most people would not even do anything about oil seepage that was not even dripping under the truck but I am kinda anal about my truck so it will be corrected.

I don't think your problem was caused by your brand choice. All synthetics are a bit quicker to leak if a gasket isn't quite right. And some more good news: Dodge is owning up to this one. Go to http://dodgeram.org/tech/tsb/2001/09-006-01.htm

and print out TSB-09-006-01, and hand a copy to your dealer.

This is exactly what TSB's are for - something that is not a "recall", because the problem appears in a smaller number of vehicles, and/or has no safety implications. But something that needs to be fixed when it does happen. With TSB in hand, your dealer should be able to fix you up right - Good Luck!

Thanks HC, even though I have a good dealer it is alway nice to give them all a little push in the right direction.

After spending sometime at Mitchell's, seeing the care and time they take putting gaskets on these 5. 9's, I wonder if the dealer will do a good job?

Well, I called the dealer about this leak and they said that they will change the gasket under warranty, though that is all that they will do. I will in return have to pay for the oil change which is $70. Talk about another 5 star screw up dealer.

I asked them that if I bring my own synthetic oil... would they put it in? I stated that me having to pay for an oil change that is warranty work is stupid. They said that because Cummins doesn't recommend a full synthetic oil in their motor that they will not put any type of synthetic oil in my truck. So then I asked them... could they change the gasket and just push my truck outside??? I'd be more then happy to put my own oil in.

They answered NO. If I want them to change the part, then I have to pay for an oil change. Boy was I ******. What do I need to do to just do the work myself???

Do I just need to do like the TSB says... just buy a gasket, some RTV. . and call it good? Or is there more to getting a good seal then that?

Thanks

K_Arts:

Check with another dealer. I bought mine from Broadway Dodge, and they have been very good to me. It seems that if the oil is the correct specification, they should put it in.

At this point, I know the Dealer will do a bad job.

Give them a hard time, report them to the regional rep, and fins another dealer.

5 screw, way to go D-C!

Depends. I see you have a CO address - so, do you get to plug in, or do you really want/need Synthetic for unplugged cold starts? Do you have a warm place to do the work? Are you willing to wait until summer?

If you need the cold starts and are not willing to wait, then let them change it, and act "happy" to have the "recommended" oil back in your crankcase. Then drive down the street to Jiffy Lube, and have them change it again with your stuff and a new filter.

If you can wait, then wait until your next oil change. Then let them put in either Delo or Rotella. Run it for 3k, 5k, whatever number makes you feel good about not "wasting" the oil. Then on your next change return to your favorite synthetic. I'm a big syn fan, but from a "wear rate" perspective I'd NEVER suggest that running one 5k cycle with an oil as good as Delo or Rotella is going to have any measurable difference in your long term engine life, nor is any "sludge" going to build up in so few miles. The only down side with this approach is that it may be several months before you put synthetic back in, so theoretically they could fix it "just good enough" for the Delo to not leak, and then the problem could return 6 months from now. But you'd have to be extremely unlucky for them to fix it "just good enough" for the second time in a row. Just food for thought.

Good Luck!

Wow $70 for an oil and filter change??? My dealer charges $48 and also greases everything and checks all of the fluid levels. The only reason I am waiting another 3000 miles to have mine fixed is that I only have 1000 miles on this oil change and I hate to waste good oil (plus mine is only seeping, not even enough to drip on the ground). My dealer was not going to charge me for the oil. It was all covered under warranty. Find a new dealer. I know their are good ones out there. At least mine has been good so far.

Ok guys... one last tid bit.

I was just out working on my wifes truck... and guess what??? She's got the leaky problem too.

For anyone that is skeptic that this is an Amsoil issue... . Well it's not.

Since Brand new, I have only been putting Premium Blue in her truck. She now has 12k on the truck still with PB. I was going to throw Amsoil in on the next oil change... . but nope. I'm gonna have her take her truck into the dealer and see what they say. If they change the oil and the gasket under warranty, then I got them pinned against the wall!!!! Guess this is going to be a little blackmail session against them. . LMAO.

I'll definately keep you guys informed on what happens.

Kev, I developed a leak on my 98. 5 at 10K. It was before amsoil and in the drivers side of the pan. It wasnt bad enough most of the time to drip on the floor but It was making a mess of the engine which I keep very clean. I discovered that the bolts were only finger tight! Took it to the dealer and they replaced the pan gasket and put in my first amsoil15-40. No questions ask. My dealer here sells amsoil for both the engine and rear end/transfer case. They are a great dealer and never ask dump questions about my bombed truck. I seriously doubt if the oil is causing the leaks, my 2 cents worth, Good luck, dave
