Hi all, I'm new to the sight so forgive me if you've talked about this. Which is the better synthetic oil? Amsoil, Delvac 1, ??? And what kind of changing intervals are you guys using? Can you go longer with the Amsoil by pass kit?

Thanks
Jerry

For me the big advantage of Amsoil over Mobil 1 Delvac, is Amsoil is shipped to my door, usually have it the next day. Mobil 1 I have to go look for, still not sure where to find it around here. I personally change the filter and add a quart at 5000 miles, then change oil & filter at 10,000, with mostly highway driving. I know if you have the bypass, you can greatly extend your change intervals, but it is HIGHLY recommended you have regular oil analysis done.

I like Randy do a filter at 5g and all at 10g,I prefer the use of mobil delvac 1 because it is readily available at any walmart across the usa and is alot cheaper than the ams oil comparing all the statistics of the 2 oils are very similar except in price and availibility, its just a matter of preference and your application,I ran a cummins 300 big cam for 420,000 on dello 400 with no problems at all, cummins guy said no since in changing these bearings as they look great! the truck sat in a heated shop at nite and was never exposed to cold start ups ,the only reason I am doing synthetics is because my cummer has to sit out at nite and I believe there is more wear taking place on my start ups than on my regular driving, also the truck sounds alot better with synthetics at start up,each to his own

I am using AMSOIL with the bypass filter and extended change intervals and oil analysis. At the 10,000 mile analysis oil was recommended for continued use. I replaced both the bypass and full flow filters and added make-up oil. Currently at 15,000 mile on this oil change. Analysis will be done every 10,000 miles and I don't expect to do a complete change for a very long time. Only time will tell. I currently have 48,000 miles on truck. There are three of us trying the same routine. A '95 Ram Cummins and a '95 Ford F150 gasser.

After extensive research, I went with AMSOIL mostly because they deliver right to my door, otherwise the specs are compariable to other brands. I became a dealer to buy at cost and have access to a tech support hotline.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

I've run both Delvac 1 and Amsoil HDD 15W40. I liked the Delvac 1 better in cold weather, it definitely circulated better and faster at startup time. I have Amsoil Series 3000 5W30 on the shelf waiting to go in at the next interval. I was told it has a higher shear strength than the Amsoil 15W40 and I've seen several postings of guys having lower Iron counts on their oil analyses.

I have looked in probably 20 different walmarts across the East coast and have never seen Mobil Delvec 1 in there! Sure your not talking about the Mobil Delvec 1200 or 1300? Its not synthetic oil like Delvec 1

I heard that Walmart stores in Canada were selling Delvac 1 at a real good price, too. But I've never seen it in Delaware or South Jersey.

If you want Mobil Delvac 1 check with your local Mobil distributor. I get mine from the distributor in Billings, MT at a really good price.

I must be getting old and worry too much. When I used Shell RotellaT 15w40, I changed the oil at 3000 miles. My previous diesel, I did the same thing. Since I wanted to extend the change period, I went to Amsoil 15w40 and their filter. I doubled it to change oil and filter at every 7500 miles. I've been concerned that I was going too far between changes, and now I see that you guys just change filters at 5k and oil at 10k. I was going to run an oil analysis to make sure that the 7500 interval was ok. Am I still stuck in the old days?

I run all highway mileage, and everyonce and a while I tow 10K. I change every oil every 7500 miles. I have had some sampled from time to. Fron what I see on the samples, the only reason it gets changed evey at 7500 is because "thats what Dodge recomends" I think Cummins recomends 15,000 for this same engine in other applications!

Amsoil definitely has less friction than anything else I've seen on the ball tests. I would say Amsoil is far better. I buy it by the 55 gal drum. I've been getting the 15-40 which I thought was the better oil (less friction)(than the 5-30 2000 series that I did run one winter)
??? I'm curious where to put a Amsoil by pass filter kit. I have a Jakebrake which takes up some space, and I just don't see any room to put two large filters in there.

I've been using Amsoil series 3000. Just got back my oil analysis report. Oil has been in the engine for 2 yrs and a little over 20,000 mile. Use only Amsoil full-flow oil filter and Amsoil air filter. I change the oil filter and send in an oil sample every 6 mos. So far all reports come back great. Current report shows Fe:45, Silicon:7, TBN:12. 2, & viscosity 10. 9 Not bad for 20,000 miles and no by-pass system. Beginning to wonder just how long I can go on just a full-flow oil filter?? Have consider many times purchasing the by-pass system, but for now my curiosity has me experimenting to see how long this Amsoil will go without special filtration.

Thought for sure this analysis would indicate the oil needed to be changed. For the last 3 mos this winter I have been driving very short trips to work (about 1 mile each way). Engine temp gauge very seldom even moves off 140. Figured this kind of driving would be murder on the oil, but not a chance. This Series 3000 just keeps going and going #ad

I'll keep ya posted if or when a report comes back indicating the oil needs to be changed.

Just thought I would try posting a picture of my engine valves after 129,000 miles and only one oil change using the Amsoil oil and the by-pass filtration.

Whitmore, I have never seen Mobil Delvac 1 at any of the Wal-Mart stores I've been to in the Pacific Northwest.

I switched to Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 HDD about 9k ago, adding the Amsoil Dual Remote Bypass system at the same time. As I JUST submitted a sample to be analyzed, I can't comment on the results. However, prior to switching to the 5W-30 I was using Amsoil's 15W-40 HDD&M. The results of the oil analysis with the Amsoil 15W-40 were the best I had ever experienced (which include the following oils I had previously used: Valvoline/Cummins Premium Blue, Red Line synthetic and Valvoline/Cummins Premium Blue 2000 semi-synthetic).

At the time I took the sample (of Amsoil 5W-30 HDD) I replaced the Amsoil full flow filter and added about 1. 5 quarts of makeup oil. Unless the oil analysis suggests/states otherwise I will be changing my oil and both filters at an interval of 15k... oh he!!, maybe 20k. #ad

CaptainEric, did you used to post on the Happy Campers BB several years ago, just prior to and after the purchase of your '98. 5 Ram? Just wondering.
