Largest Cummins I ever Saw!

I seen it!! (dmax)

I thought GM claimed these things were completely test BEFORE production? Looks like the GM designed Allison is a winner. Sure glad I have my MT CTD.

Well, I've owned my truck for a little over a month now and have 3270 miles. Have yet to tow anything, just easy driving. Last Monday, the transmission temperature started creeping up on a 12 mile ride back to work after lunch and kept making about 15 degree jumps. By the time I made it to work, the trans temp was about 265 degrees on the edge of redline and it didn't want to shift well as I was pulling into the parking lot. No "trans temp hot" light or engine fan. Let it sit all afternoon, made appointment at the dealer, and then drove it home after work with no problems (dealer didn't seem too concerned... hard to believe). I then started on a short trip and made it about a half mile when it let loose. The service engine soon light came on, the truck couldn't find a gear that it liked, and finally just picked something that felt like second or third. I turned around and limped home.

When the rollback showed up the next morning, the truck wouldn't even move. It just sat there until I turned it on/off a couple of times and finally got it to move the few feet so it was angled right for the rollback. It's at the dealer now.

They tried a pressure switch of some sort (not sure exactly), but that didn't fix it and the new transmission was supposed to be here Friday.

Just thought you guys might be interested. If you don't believe me, I'll give you VIN and dealer info via email (rather not post that stuff).

Funny thing is, I've owned 6 trucks (all Chevy's) over the years. Not one has had a single trans problem. The first one with a true, heavy duty transmission with a real great reputation croaks in the first two months! What a crock.

Sorry to see the trans trashed that early. That being said, at least it happened under warranty. Any trans from any brand can self-destruct early... . after all it's only as good as the guy on the line who put it together.

BTW, your truck has a G80 locker, not a limited slip diff.

Here's the update:

They put the new transmission in and everything was fine for about 70 miles (except for the transmission fluid I had to clean off of just about everything). Then I picked up three sheets of plywood and the trans wouldn't shift any higher than 3rd (no shift indicator box around D or anything else, either). Makes things a little difficult on the freeway!

I limped to a friend's house where I could leave it if I had to. As soon as I put it in reverse, the shift indicator box came back and it's been fine ever since. Took it to the dealer the next day and, of course, got the dreaded "could not duplicate".

I've since put another 400 miles on it with no problems. One thing I have noticed, the trans temp does not go anywhere near as high as it used to. I've yet to see it go above the last hash just before the 200 mark. The last trans would always go to one or two hashes PAST the 200 mark in city driving and sometimes higher.

I'm not having much luck with my dealer. My Duramax has a squeal from about 900-1500 rpm (can hear it in the cab with the windows up to tell you how loud it is). Sounds like it's metal to metal (service writer's words) and is likely pulley related. They were supposed to fix that at the same time but they decided they need to "hear another Duramax first". Of course, they don't have one. I'm supposed to wait until one comes in.

I'm really beginning to wonder if I've got a lemon. Ohio has one of the strongest lemon laws in the nation and I'm thinking on using it if much more happens.

Later.

I go to the truck plant here in Flint almost everyday, there are a pile of Allisons in bens that were no good from the factory. Yeah a real winner

I hate to say this, but every manufacturer of anything mechanical has defective parts. Wether is a toaster or a transmission. The total number of defects is not important. If you have 1000 defective transmissions, yet product 1,000,000 a year that is not bad (only 0. 1% defective). What matters is the ratio of defective products to total number of products produced. If I remember the quote correctly, Pepsi produces 10,000 cans of flat soda-pop a day. This only makes up for 0. 01% of total daily production. Just remember this when 99. 99% is not good enough. Something as complex as an auto transmission is much more complex to produce than a can of pop.

I do not necessarly like Allison Transmissions, they are usually very good about warranty returns. I do not think they are needed in a p. u. , but they do have their place in the heavier truck lines. One of the main problems with Allison trannys is that you need to return them to get them services. They (Allison) do not like to release parts to the public, they do very few rebuilds outside of their factory.

I can't wait to read all the trash-talking and just plain denials on this site when the 1st 2003 Cummins ****s the bed and someone mentions it over on the GM or Ford diesel sites.

Sorry to hear about your troubles... that sure doesnt do anything about filling you with confidence in your new truck, does it? Im sure GM will stand behind their product, as yours surely isnt the only one with faults. One thing I'd like to 'correct' about your initial post... the Allison in your truck is NOT "heavy duty". It is rated as "light duty". It's too bad they wouldnt stick in the same gearbox that goes in the big diesel pusher MH's!!!

allisons

bc, i understood tejas deezul to be quoting a GM site?? not his own truck?? somebody correct me if wrong.

BTW one of my close friends just bought a new Maxi and had a new Allison in it by about 2K miles. after riding with me he says the HD Ram could kick his Maxi's butt... ... ..... hmmmm wonder if the DDIII's have anything to do with that???
