Another big safety recall?

My truck is getting the orc reprogrammed and the steering electrical problem fixed right now. Dropped it off Tuesday evening and they called me 2 hours ago telling me it was done.

This rental dodge caravan gets worse fuel mileage than my truck. Can't wait to get the truck back.

But traffic was just too bad to get there before they closedl

Ok how do I get rid of the Air Bags? Any one offer a kit? The whole idea of having this explosive charge in my steering wheel has never sat well with me. Now they are every where inside our trucks and their systems are failing just look at all the re-calls on them. Every unit ever made is effected one way or the other. That notice at a Honda board meeting must have gone over well: "One of our cars killed someone, No sir it wasn't in a crash Booze was not involved the owner was simply driving down the road and the Air Bag went off only the unit exploded and killed the driver...."

That just sounds like a totally idiotic thing to do. I wonder if there are stats that show how many lives were saved because of airbags vs. those taken by them.

Also, I don't think I've heard of random detonations as being a problem, only detonating with too much force or the most recent big one was from shrapnel being released during deployment. Do you have a source for random detonations?

No, not really idiotic. In context of today's malfunctions and design defects this is a serious concern and needs to be an alternative. Airbags are NOT working as expected by randomly going off, detonating, or not working at all when needed. All of a sudden it come to light of the past 15 years we have dead bodies piling up over airbags where the past was a smaller pile. We have parts suppliers and typical bean counters at car companies wanting to save a buck. Currently no one in our Government has the balls to stand up and say "Quit using unstable Ammonium Nitrate in airbags" by making this substance illegal for airbag use. (Yeah, that's what it is going to take to prevent some cheap supplier being a low bidder and continuing to use it.) Why not? Cost to OEM's? The wiring and unintended deployment is really 2nd order of magnitude compared to that. GM has the privilege of being first in this 'ongoing airbag scare with no end in sight' over their unintended ignition key rotation that shuts off your engine and disables the airbags in a car that isn't survivable without them working.

It's time we look hard at CAFE and quit designing or accepting "Coffins on wheels" for vehicles. Bring back the 5MPH bumper standard.

Having a "First class front row seat" to watching family survive a near fatal accident in a midsize car where the airbag was the reason it wasn't fatal combined with seat belt use, well, we have come to the conclusion that the car was too damned small rather than giving credit to the airbag. The airbag, although helped, did shatter their bones in the hand and make their face look like Uncle Fester as well as word loss concussion. The 1980's van that caused the head on didn't have air bags and they all walked away. 4 years and 26+ surgeries later they are finally back to work, but, will never be the same suffering for the rest of their life from it.

So when I say 6 MPG at $6.00 a gal for fuel is fine with me it's only because the medical cost of the above would allow over for over 1 million miles at that MPG and fuel cost easily. It's be an inconvenient truth to do a study not done of small coffin on wheels vs a bigger container vehicle including Elk...

I would say our trucks are some of the heaviest vehicles on the road. I traded in my 4 cylinder gasser after being repeatedly hit by other cars. I noticed when being hit by larger cars. (People on their phones and driving are crazy) I feel very safe in my Cummins powered truck.

Just got off the phone with the dealer. They don't even have the parts yet to fix this and don't know when they will get them in. So making an appointment to correct this can't happen yet. I hate finding out there is a recall on my rig from the media. Of course I then check on the forum to see if you all had gotten the word. We'll see where this goes.

I actually got the recall notice on wednesday.

Took my truck down to have the front pinion seal fixed under warranty today and asked them to perform the airbag recall work as well.

Was told they have yet to see the parts necessary to perform the recall.

From the recall notice:

THE STEERING WHEEL WIRE HARNESS WILL BE INSPECTED, AND IF NEEDED REPAIRED. THE STEERING WHEEL WIRE HARNESS WILL BE REROUTED AND SECURED TO PREVENT WIRE CHAFFING AND PROTECTIVE CAPS WILL BE INSTALLED ONTO THE AIRBAG RETAINER SPRING ENDS.

They need to install these protective caps. The dealer will not even perform the inspection until the protective caps are in stock.

It's getting hard to keep track of all these recalls...and it's frustrating to find out that they still are issuing recalls notices when they aren't prepared to do the work.

Dealer said that the 2014s are up to nine (9) recalls.....I didn't bother to check if she was right or not.

The reason for the recall notification (or lack of) situation today is because of a change to the law that requires the manufacturer to issue the recall as soon as they provide the information to the feds. Prior to the rule change they had more time to get things in place as the investigation was continuing. I can assure you the manufacturers and the dealers are not any happier about the reporting situation than you are. But the bottom line is, under the old rules the problem was still there, they just didn't have to announce it until later in the process, so you are not any safer now than then unless you choose not to drive it.
And as far as feeling safe in my vehicle or any other vehicle, the chances of getting injured or killed is still far less than the few injuries or deaths that have occurred because of defects. If you don't want to take a risk with anything you might as well stay in bed. And if you think it is going to get better, just look at the fuel economy targets the industry has to hit by 2025. The manufacturers are not any happier about that legislation.

Ok, So after re-reading that article.... Does any one know what wield is bad on the 2013 trucks? is it on the 2500's or the 3500's the 2500's had the same chassie and suspension as the 2012's. Reason I ask is I feel a very slight culnk in my steering wheel but only some times. I can't get it to repeat it self but it's there. also can't find anything loose on the front end or in the linkage....
