My truck eats lift pumps like potato chips! :(

A little history on it, 10 months back (60,000 on truck) lift pump died, replaced at dealer. January pump dead, replaced by dealer (10,000 miles) March lift pump dead after 1000 miles. pump runs for about 1 second then stops, I checked for power and it was o. k. Dealer replaced pump and says it had "high resistance" now 2 weeks later exactly the same thing, pump runs for a second then stops even though it has power to it.

The truck has low power, sets a 1693 code and stumbles between 1600-2000 rpm. I have change fuel filters each time and found nothing out of the ordinary. Truck is a 01. 5 ETH with no mods.

Any ideas what can be killing these pumps???

make sure you dont havesome restriction in the line from the tank . or a problem in the tank itself. how about the vent in the tank, is it clear? just some thoughts.

Get a F. A. S. S.

That will keep your Lp from going out !

I agree. My truck was acting something like that. I put the fass on and had no problems. Of course you could go with a pusher pump too but I never used one. jmt

I think there was an article in a recent TDR covering the liftpump dilemma. It was thought bad wiring and/or lack of a proper ground was more at fault than any other factor.

I'd check the pickup in the tank to see if someone put something in there to clog it. Also doing some checking on the wiring. I quit using those factory lift pumps and used a marine carter pump from Jegs for around $80, seemed to have better luck with them, but now I run a FASS system.

By any remote chance is this happening by just turning the key to the "on" Position?

Hi ToolMan,

Yes it happens by turning the key just to the "on" position and no change if the drain or top of the fuel filter are off... pump runs for a second the stops. Seems to be the same thing with the truck running, no lift pump and truck starves for fuel.

wire gauge

What amazes me is Dodge "engineers" allows the pump to be placed in the wrong location, pulling instead of pushing and the pigtail they furnish is way under guage that Carter specifies.

Oh I was going to say because THAT is NORMAL!

However being it is quitting when running that IS no good. Have you verified this with a guage?

Update on lift pump???

Well took the beast back to the dealer today and here is what they found (or didn't) Code P0122 APPS signal voltage to high and P0230 Transfer pump circuit out of range. Tech followed service manual trouble shooting and could find no cause for either code. Intresting point here when drove into bay lift pump wouldn't run, cleared codes and now runs fine? and no codes reset... Also on trip to dealer I thought I wouldn't make it due to engine cutting out, now runs fine

I guess the only good part was the bill was $37 for 2+ hours

Any ideas out there?

I had similar stumble problems once... It was the TPS plug. Wasn't seated properly and got water in it.

There's just nothing as unnerving as a 530hp truck toggling between WOT and idle :--)

I cleaned and reseated the plug and it fixed it.

FWIW,

Mark

You've gotta have a plugged screen in the fuel tank. There' no way you should be going through LP's like that. If you're sure there's 12V to the pump. . start looking back towards the tank.
