in my 98. 5, the first liftpump went 71K miles, Now 12K and 15 months later I think its going again. I was doing my "once per year oil and fuel filter change" today ( I only use it to move my Husquvarna or my 5th wheel, about 6K per year) so I figured I would test the lift pump before changing the fuel filter. you know how hard it is to prime the fuel filter with an "almost bad" liftpump!
Hit starter, but don't let it start, gauge goes right up to 12psi, but as pump is still running it will drop down to about 3psi in a second or 2 (pump will run for about 45 sec each time.
Ok, maybe its going bad, so I change the filter anyway while I am in there, (no metal in filter) after about 10 cycles (just to be sure) I let the truck start, no problem.
I take it for a drive. At start up I have 12psi, but after about a minute I notice the pressure drops to 3 psi, then back up to 12, then down to 3 (changes about every 10 seconds) as the truck is sitting there idleing. Maybe there's still some air in the line so I take it out for a drive.
I make an 'almost" WOT run through the first couple gears and it holds 12psi, then as I start cruse it goes down to 2-3 and stays there. It would not budge off 2-3 until I shutdown and restart.
Go figure, The last pump just plain would not do more then 8 at idle, then would hit 0-2 under load, none of this jumping around stuff.
So I figure maybe my 2' of hose to the gauge (with air in it) is the problem, so I mount the gauge right on the filter, fire up the truck It hits 12, then for a couple seconds, then goes to 3 and stays there!
What is this pump I here you guys are mounting back at the tank and removing the stock pump? Malorie or something? (actualy I have been following those threads some, but forget which one last the longest. Say in the future I may add a VA and 275's, what pump would you recomend now that I have to PAY for this one. (dealer says "the lift pump is only covered for 80K under the emissions warrante on the 98. 5HD" I now have 84K
PS: I took a look at the Series 2000 I put in my 5 speed 6K miles ago, what used to be blue is now all gray looking!
98. 5, 2wd, 5 speed, Rays Banjo bolts.
