illflem,,Hate to bust your bubble on this one here,but,97's and 98's ARE NOT immune to this problem,,I myself have had TWO fail me on my 98 5spd,,First one before my time here at 37,000 miles and the second one at 41,000 miles,,I have not had a lick of problems since then,,Now one thing I do know thru all this fun is this, hope and I mean hope, that IF yours(anyones) breaks in warranty period you do not have ANY mods to motor, because the cost of this job made my heart stand still when I wrote the check for the second one,,Stealers will look for any way out of this as a warranty claim and they do have a service bulletin out mandating they check for all/or any modifications that would void warranty,,Now when I compared my two bills I noticed a part number change on the covers and upon looking into it I found that they(stealer) had installed a normal one for the first repair(part they had at the time) and on the second one it was a updated part(new design),,The Cummins man who did the repair at dealers has since quit(and ended his silence) and when I chatted with him recently he informed me they did this redesign to help fix the KDP problem,,Oh and one other thing he told me was this, you guys who drive 24 valvers and think your safe, may want to rethink that idea,he had done a few of them also,,Stealer had upset him so bad with all their politics,he left them and now is installing telephone lines,,I've said it before and I'll say it again,l whish one of these manufacturers(Cummins or DC) would at least own up to the problem so guys could get them checked BEFORE problems arise, all they think of is the bottom line, their pocketbooks,,Take our money and the **** with the rest... . Just my . 02

I have the gaskets to remove the front cover but I dont have the KDP locking tab. Is there a part number for this, and where do I get one?

It's not a part that can be purchased - it has to be constructed out of whatever material you have at hand. I made mine out of 1/8" thick ground oil-hard tool steel. Not that it has to be hardened but it was what I had and it is nice and flat. You also have to get a slightly longer bolt to hold it in and it has to be a hardened bolt like the original one that it replaces.

JConley,

E-mail me at -- email address removed -- and I will send you the info for the job which includes a sketch with dimensions for the part.

That ex Cummins mechanic was "right on" about the 24Valvers.

Last year when I was at Dave Mitchells, I looked at four used

24v housings hanging on the wall. Three of them had the dowel hole reamed straight thru, the fourth one had the step.

Dave didn't know what years they were from, except the one with the step was a "very late one"

It will be interesting to see if they start dropping pins like the 12v.

Sorry for the misinformation on the '98s immunity, guess that's what I get for believing everything I read on the net...
