While driving through a school zone last week I hit one of the speed limit/school zone signs placed in between the two lanes with my drivers side towing mirror. At first I saw no damage, as the mirror just folded back towards the door. I opened the window and pushed the mirror back in position. I then adjusted the mirror with my power lever and noticed that the mirror would only rotate on the up and down axis, not the in and out axis.

Can the mirror be disassembled and just that part repaired, or do I need to look into replacing the whole mirror assembly?

So no one has disassembled the mirror head on one of these towing mirrors to see whats up? Guess I'll try this weekend and see if it is repairable.

I tried on the '05 when the power portion of the mirror quit working. It was extremely difficult to remove the mirror glass without breaking it, only to find out it's pretty much impossible to repair anything inside. Was a lot easier to get a replacement mirror (actually got a pair power heated for $240 shipped). Good luck though...

If I remember correctly these mirrors have a round head on the backside of the mirror itself with "tabs" that lock it into place with the adjustment head. Adjust or push the mirror all the way inboard and look in the opening at the outboard edge..... check to see if your tabs are still locked in place. Do the opposite to see the inside tab as well. It may have just bumped it off the retaining tab. . hopefully. A long flat screwdriver or trim tool could be used to pop to tab back on... ... unless it's broken off.

The adjustment mechanism is probably just maxed out in the direction you are trying to move it, just push it by hand in the other direction, you will hear it clicking, should work then. bg PS: By the way, I did have mine apart but not on purpose, I backed it into a tree. Everything snaps out except the adjusting mechanism. The mirror slides off toward the outside, the base for the mirror has 4 snaps, one on each edge but I don't know how to release them, mine just came out all the way. If you try this, be very careful, the glass is very thin and fragile. bg

Mirror removal

This is a picture of the Tow mirror on my 03, if you place your mirror in the tow position and adjust it out you will see two metal tabs(Only two tabs, the other side of the clip is connected to the mirror). If you squeeze the tabs together and inward away from the mirror (they are half round) they will realease the mirror from the housing. You will have to work with it a little and it will come off. However make sure when installing them you place the clips back into the grove they came out of or you will have a big blind spot on the first bump you hit.
