I'd like to get in on this problem. I just put my mod in last week and towed my 18k gcwr rig to Maine and got killed on EGT's. Whole post in Need more boost thread just below this one in the outer page. I had High Tech Turbo install a bigger (60mm compared to stock 54mm) compressor wheel and housing-their stage 3 kit on my original turbo. Thought that would do the trick, but not so. Perhaps there is a leak in the system and some induction air is leaking out from a loose clamp-I'll have to check this weekend. I had to leave my TST box off b/c the injectors alone were giving too high egts uphill. Did read in the other thread that loose clamps is a possibility. Other thing is that I haven't installed boost elbow yet. High Tech made the turbo give me 28 lbs, but that's all. Putting the elbow in the weekend. I've been told that if there is nothing mechanically wrong that maybe going back to stock or at least a smaller aftermarket compressor might spool up quicker and at lower RPMs which is what we want for towing. Hopefully not necessary. Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out.

Try turning your TST box off & run SW3 while towing... . should be much better for you. I can't get EGTs past 1150 on hard pulls towing 15k# with this setting. I think quad will have the shuddering problem fixed in the next day or 2. This box is just gonna be awesome! I can't wait to try his race box!:-laf

Yup, thanks for the advice. That's exactly how I was running-TST off and smarty on 3. When I say I had egt problems, I don't mean I was running this way and was at say, 1500* going flat at 65mph. Nothing crazy like that. I was, however, pulling hills at 60mph in 5th gear and running egts of 1200-1300. I know this in the outer limit of acceptable, but I had nothing in reserve. If I tried to go a bit faster, the truck would pull hard, but temps climb too high. On longer grades I was running just a hair shy of 1300 for the whole time uphill. I would back out of it a bit, but then I was going just as slow as before I made the mods. Also couldn't really drive on flat ground in 6th gear. 5th kept the turbo running faster and cooled everything off, but only to about 900 on flat ground at 65mph. A friend of mine runs a similar setup, but with stock turbo and runs about 750 on flat ground pulling a horse trailer. Lighter that what I was pulling, but on flat ground shouldn't matter that much. Doesnt' take much pedal pressure to keep going on the flats.

I am worried now.

Ok I have talked with Cummins724 before and posted a couple of time. I have a 40ft toyhauler 5th wheel. I am not getting anywhere near these EGTs. I had my outlook installed at a shop I wonder if they did not put it in the right place. I can haul mine on flat ground doing 75 that is with big tires in 5th. I have only once hit 1200 on a hill and that was in 5th doing 65. :confused:

Check your pyrometer. Is it mounted in the exhaust manifold? [before the turbo] If it is mounted in the exhaust elbow [after the turbo] It is wrong.

Well... . had to take the Quadzilla box off my truck yesterday for more testing on a stock truck. After running the quad box for 2 days & still waiting on my new Drag Comp to get here... . I loaded Smarty back into the ECM. Although I love my Smarty, I noticed immediately that I didn't have the top end power that I had with the quad box. The truck kinda felt dead on the top & egts are about 50* higher across the board. I will be testing & comparing all parameters soon, but for now... . Quad really is on to something with their new line for sure!

Wrong EGTs

Well thank mr cummins724. The individual that installed my outlook pe drilled and tapped the elbow after the turbo not before. So the reading I am getting are for crap. Now what do I do. :{

Or get another pyro gauge and have pre and post turbo readings. That would make lemonade :)

Of course, connect your Outlook pre-turbo.

I've heard most guys say that if you have the probe post-turbo, it will read approx. 350* cooler than what your manifold actually is.

I tow heavy also and I also had the 275s and a ez. The Smarty on #5 will be stronger for towing than the EZ. The Smarty widens your powerband which helps a lot when towing heavy. If you not sure if you would be happy with a Smarty Bob Wagner may be willing to send you a loaner. I tried the Smarty as a loaner and couldnt give it back. I went to jammer3s now and it tows stronger than ever but now I have to drive by egts. :{ I am planning on a turbo upgrade to be able to use more pedal.

I am wondering if an after market cam through one of the vendors, does in fact allow a wider power band. The information I have read states max. torque comes on at a lower rpm than stock. Something to do with emissions. Does anybody have real world experience on this or information? I believe I read an article on it in Dieselpower Magazine.

It stated the cam allowed for lower EGT's and max torque in the 2050 RPM range. I drive an 05 with 48re and no overdrive lockout with a 3. 73 axle.

Barry.
