Anybody running an HX 40 turbo ... . the Dodgezilla or Piers ?

Would a 40 be too much turbo for what these engines can fuel?

Would a 35 be a better choice?

I ask because my son is planning for the S-10 project... . he wants a BIG turbo and quick power so I was thinking a 12 cm wastegated housing. Truck will probably have a large intercooler in the bed with an electric fan. (certainly won't be any room left up front)

Any thoughts? (other than he's crazy)

Thoughts..............

Hummmmmmmmmmmm. Ahhhhhhhh.

Well, the 40 is used around 365hp (perhaps) and more like 385 to 500hp. They spool a bit slower when set up properly than a smaller unit, so you (he'll) be the judge on that call. It would work if he has a 3500 and pull'n a bull dozer but, not so well suited for quick power off the line.

We use three BIG turbos on the pulling tractor... ... ... ... ... but don't need a quick get-a-way off the line. It (the engine) is wound tight like a drum prior to launch.

Yeah, there are a few of us out there running them. Mine is from Diesel Dynamics. They work pretty well if you have the fuel for it. I installed mine at 375hp. I had a 35/40 before. I am now thinking about doing something a little different. Need more air.

If i had the $$$ id go with Twins if i had Room

He would do that in a heartbeat, but with an S-10 no way there will be ANY space left:( :(

He will have enough trouble stuffing in a single.

Twins will spool a little slower than the small turbo in the setup. Once they are rolling though, hang on.

Yes I understand twins will spool slower than a smaller turbo like an H1C,Or Hx35 but a 40 is going to be slower than the twins . In the posts above i was trying to load a image of the lastest project at the shop. Twins on a 444 cummins in a conventional semi. Hoping for high 13s... . :--) ... Working Truck.....

Hey buddy, I know exactly what that truck of yours needs... Heh heh heh... Look forward to seeing you in a week or so! :D

Hey Evan, good to hear from you. Yeah, I need one of those, and maybe something else too. You should come by for the job. I'm sure it will be a late one! Looking forward to seeing you too. :)

That S-10 will be awful light with the tq he will have.

Perhaps a bit of lag off the line will help it hook, get it rolling before the big power hits.

There are a ton of combos. If the 40 is used as the small turbo in the twin setup, like many guys are running, the twins will spool slower than the 40. I just didn't want people to get the wrong impression about off the line spoolup with twins.

I disagree, but I never ran a single 40.

I feel my 35/16 single 302hp set up was just a hair quicker spool up than my 500hp 40/18 H3/26.

The first set of twins was 35/16 h3/26, and it was like a light switch spooling-mash-ON!
