Want a 4in remote mount exhaust brake

Any 4" exhaust that's quieter than stock setup, or just as quiet. I tow a lot and would like to install a 4" exhaust system but do not want the truck any loader than it already is and would prefer it to be quieter.

Install a resonator in front of the muffler. I have the Jardine exhaust with a resonator in front of the muffler and it is very quiet.

resonator

Hey fj!! What type of resonator did you use? I think I need one but don't know what or where to get it!! Thanks

The magnaflow system is very quiet. I was able to carry on a conversation with 2 people standing next to the tailpipe. I would say that its darn near quieter than stock.

Ron,

Call Rip at Source Automotive. I had a Jardine with a 24" MagnaFlow, I was getting tired of my ears ringing after towing or a long drive, I called Rip and got a super deal on a 20" MagnaFlow. He even delivered it to the NWBombers Bombing party at Rob Hansons. In installed it in front of the 24" MagnaFlow as far forward as I could.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

I really like the new found quietness of my "White Obsession"!Oo. :D

Call Rip! He can build you a super system that is quiet! At a great price!

I am with Big Bob. While empty it did not bother me too much, towing I was getting tired of the exhaust. I now have 2 - 4" flow thru mufflers one in from of the other. One basically where the cat used to be and the other in the stock location.

Its quiet as can be. Inside the cab I here no exhaust tone coming from the rear of the truck at all now. At any RPM or load. At the same NW bombers party Big Bob mentioned I told a few people as I was curious to see how it sounded outside. I figured that exterior cool sound was now suffering at the expense of my new interior quiet. I was somewhat happy when they told me it sounded fine. Of couse nothing like straight pipes and probably not quite as cool as before, but better that stock. And inside its way cool. No noticable increase in EGT's either.

To be honest I am not sure. I'm not sure it really matters. I think if you go with just the typical 4" one muffler system, picking the right one maybe important to minimize/eliminate drone. With either a 4" resonator and a 4" flow thru muffler or 2 - 4" mufflers I dont think any will drone that much, if at all. -- If you already have a 4" system I would select a short / low profile resonator or a muffler as the second unit depending on the level of quiet you want. And toss it in there. The 20" magaflow from Rip is perfect.

I started with a BD 4" cat back back before I heard of the TDR. Then PDR installed the 4" downpipe and completed that part a while ago. Then not too long ago I had PDR install the second muffler. Just cut out a section of the pipe right in front of the BD muffler ( where the cat used to be ) and installed a second one. Not sure the brand. MagnaFlow I think?

I would give a plug for Rip also ( see Big Bob's post ). I talked with him about this too. He has done quite a few NWBombers trucks in this fashion using the resonator/muffler and muffler/muffler combo. Depending on the level of quiet you want he will customize a system for you.

I got mine from Jerry Jardine when I ordered my 4" exhaust. He charged me like 35. 00 extra for the Magnaflow resonator (really a small muffler). Jardine uses Magnoflow mufflers and they have a very nice sound (not very loud). I added the resonator because I wanted to keep the stock sound, yet still have the peformance.

Ronsram,

My dad put a 5" resonated tip on his ford, and it made the truck quieter. Who'd a thought a 5" tip making a truck quieter, plus it looks sweet and even says "the big dog" on it. :D :D

UPDATE:

I called Rip at Source Automotive today. He has a 4" Diamond Eye system (turbo back) for $335. 00. He can add another muffler and still keep it under $400. 00 + shipping. He said he has installed it and will stand behind it.

At this point I plan to call him back and ask a couple more questions and probably order it.

Thanks for the information guys. It sounds like the simple solution would be to just add another flow through muffler, does it really quiet things down better than stock? I do not have a 4" exhaust yet but I am researching until I find what is best for me.

If anyone else has something to add please do so.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron ... if you're interested in exhaust noise/levels in the cab, then have you're muffler shop simply route it straight out the back & put a chrome 'turn down' on the end. End of problem.

That way, you can take advantage of the 4" system & won't have to choke it down. You might also want to put on the Donaldson muffler ... pls see my signature.

Been down this road..

Not sure if you remember how loud my truck was Ron at Mikes last fall?? I have a 4" Jardine with an extra muffler. Verlyn Fast (the 155mph truck) also had a Jardine on his.

If you like quiet, no matter who's you buy, make sure and install with band clamps. Jardine and I believe Rip use Magnflow mufflers. These have ZERO restriction.

If I was doing it all over, I would start with an off the shelf system (Jardine, Rip, Jannetty, etc). I would install with band clamps, but make sure to intall the muffler as far forward as possible. Many system (guessing) come with two 36" straight pipe pieces. When installing the muffler in the stock location, these two pieces would be installed together between the down pipe and the muffler. I would move the muffer in between these two. You need about 10" of pipe behind the down pipe to get behind the transmission hanger if you want to get as far forward as possible.

Try system, if you need queiter, I would get another 20" or 24" muffler and add it in the stock location (just cut out enough straight pipe). You will have about 24" or so pipe inbetween the two mufflers. I moved one of the factory hanger farther forward to help carry the weight. It will be quiet, you will like it.

If we ever get together again you sure welcome to drive mine!

?

Has anyone tried a 4" glasspack as a second muffler or resonator. Is the 20" muffler being discussed as large in diameter as the other? Have the drone and loud cab noise level. Would like to quieten it down some. Thanks

James

James,

I have the 20" resonator in front of my muffler. It is straight flow design just like a muffler. A resonator is really a small muffler. I'll be at the DFW dyno days if you want to hear my setup.
