A little before my time to remember them coming off the showroom floor, but I've heard lots about them.
I was lucky enough to grow up in Odessa, TX where Sewell Ford was a Total Performance dealer. Among the cars I got to sit in in their showroom and drool all over when I was a teenager:
1964 Cobra (yeah, the real one) 289 4-speed - sticker price of $5,495. 00!

British Racing Green, with wire wheels and Goodyear Blue Streaks.
1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 - street and comp versions
1964 or 1965 (can't remember for sure) Fairlane Thunderbolt 427
1967 Mustang GT with 390 BHP (hydraulic lifter) 427
1968 Torino Talledega
Lots of SCJ 428 and SCJ 429 Mustangs and Torinos
Boss 429 1970 Mustang
And probably more that I've forgotten, like Boss 302 Mustangs, etc.
The most interesting was a Texas DPS Interstate pursuit car that I saw in Sewell's shop. A 1966 plain white wrapper Galaxie 4-door with full roll cage and 427 SOHC (2 Holley 4 barrels) and T&C top-loader 4 speed. It was sorta like the black helicopters - it officially never existed!! Too bad we didn't have digital cameras back then.
So, what did I wind up with? A HyPo 289/4 speed 1965 Mustang coupe. Wish I still had it! I replaced it with a 1970 Mercury Cyclone GT (351C/4V) with all the goodies when I got out of college - my wife wishes she still had that one!
