In California the exhaust cannot exit to the side between 3' and 11' off of the ground.

I have been busted by the CHP when the operators turn them outward on our crane trucks.

so you gotta run miter cuts or flat tops I guess in Cali ;)

very interesting on the exhaust brake... I'd always figured they were quiet... everyone I talked to who had one said they were.

forrest

I have two exhaust brake equipped Cummins Diesel's, both quiet. I know an old log truck, with a 1693 Cat engine equipped with an exhaust brake, it is quiet also. Strait pipes or strait stacks don't seem to make any more "brake" noise, than mufflers, however strait pipes and full power blast-offs will, maybe the "cop's" are confused!!

Missouri law says "all motor vehicles" have to have a muffler and the muffler must quiet the exhaust to the maximum ammout possible as, "is done in modern gas engine passenger motor vehicles. " I hope this helps.

I wouldn't worry about what other state laws require. Your truck is registered in your home state (Washington). As long as there's no problem having stacks in your,,,, registered state, you should be OK!

I got the stack mounts in this last weekend. I am running them through the bed so that I can still use the bed for plywood, sheetrock, ect. I had to wait for some help tonight to get the canopy off. I set them in place and I think they look really good. I have heard of a couple of guys that ran their pipes under the bed. Can anybody give me a few pointers on what they did, or what to avoid. I also have a fiberglass highrise canopy that I have been thinking about frenching in fiberglass tubes in the front corners to run the stacks in. The stacks would be exposed about 2/3 up from the bottom of the canopy sides. Has anyone done this before? Otherwise I'll run both exhaust systems so I can switch out when I need the canopy. Any advice or ideas form anybody would be appreciated?

that is correct, most states grant equipment reciprocity as long as that equipment is legal in the state the vehicle is registered in.

Stacks are in...

They are in. I have a couple of fittings on order so they are not functional yet. It should sound good when it's finished. I am deliberating cutting holes in the canopy so I can still use it as well.

He He

I thought so too. I wanted miter cut stacks but got these due to the rain. I guess I could cut a foot or so off with the miter box and have the miters that I had wanted. Not sure yet. I want them to clear the canopy if I french them into it. Here is another picture from the side.

#1 I would not cut off the top to get your miter. I did that one my sevice truck and the pipe is rusting at the top. It runs the rust down the outside of the pipe now.

#2 I have been in Missouri alot, live near there, and I did not belive that they had an exhaust law! :-laf The loudest trucks around come from Missouri! :D

#3 My brother's 94 has 4" from turbo to the 5" stacks. They were tall like yours, sounded fine. He then cut them down to look better on the truck, with them turned about 45* out. Then they were terribly loud in the cab. I do not know how he kept the trim from shaking off the dash!! The truck would hit a certain rpm range 1800-2000, and the truck would talk. I talked to him last weekend and he turned the stacks straight back and then the cab ride was alot better.

#4 I have been running around with dual straight pipes under my first gen for a long time, towing heavy trailers through many towns and have only had one complaint about my exhaust. That was after I smoked a 350 powered chivvy pickup off the stoplights, spun the tires, and run it to about 50 in a 35. All with a cop right behind me . Somehow I got off with out even a ticket.

Mr Moeller knows how my truck sounds/smokes/ and how I drive with my right foot. And I still have had no problems.

No worries with the new stacks, 'cept maybe some covers for parking to keep moisture out. I have a coffee can for my service truck, keeps it from slobbering soot all over the white truck in the morning.

sorry, but those miter caps are ugly... I'd rather just run witout caps. rain really isn't that big a deal IMHO... I've had my miter cuts on for over a month... it's been raining like crazy down here, and there are only a few little specs of soot on my white truck... and no, I haven't washed it in well over a month! LOL!

I wouldn't cut those curved stacks into miters... they'll rust at the lips. just trim 'em down a little at the base, and you'll be good to go. don't get me wrong, if you like 'em keep 'em as is! :D

ask and ye shall receive...

not very good pics, but you get the idea... truck looks a little different now... LOTS of soot buildup on the back of the stacks ;) and I removed the grill guard.

Forrest

Leave 'em as is.

Forrest your stacks are pretty tall as well. They look good with the mitre tops. With all the rain we get up here I think turnout tops or caps are a good idea for me. After a good rain I bet you are puffin steam for a while. Mine are farther out to the box sides and are through the bed so I can still carry a 4x8 sheet of whatever, as well as lumber.

I keep looking out the window at the truck. I like them the way they are. I am pretty sure anyway. I am going out to home depot today so I'll be able to see how they look from across a parking lot. I want them tall enough to keep the noise above the cab and clear the canopy. Anyway, they are on. Time to get them connected (as soon as the parts arrive), get the canopy modified, then get the CB installed.

The stack that was on my service truck was a flat top and a junk rain cap that rattled like mad brand new from ford. The stack was way too high so I cut it down and mitered it in the band saw, full well knowing that eventually I was going to get a turnout. In the garage right now is a new 5" turn out and 4"-5" adapter. I need to get the clamps and then install it. After some updates to the engine then the muffler will be MIA and hopefully the little CAT will sound nice. Oh yeah this is on my company vehicle.

Michael

As for cops, keep your foot out of it when they are around and you will have no problems. That is coming from a 19 year old with stickers on his back windows but a straw hat (country boy) that is put on strait instead of a sideways cap. :D

As for your stacks I think the height is perfect for the truck. Mine are higher than all of yours and most consider them not that bad.
