I miss the authoratative sound of the '99. It let you know you had something under you. The new one, seems to do everything it has to, it just sounds like a car. Am I the only one?

HPCR owners miss the Cummins sound

I prefer the sound of the 2nd Gen trucks over the car like quiet of the 3rd GEN trucks.

I currently have a 99 3500 and love the sound of the 2nd trucks but unfortunately the automatic transmissions in these other wise great trucks are junk in my opinion.

Out of frustration with the transmission failures and due my unwillingness to drive nothing but a Cummins powered truck i am ordering a new 05' CTD 3500 6 spd.

I will miss my 99 and will have to adjust to the lack of a true diesel sound i currently enjoy. I sometimes think that the D-Max is louder.

Over all i am anxios to get the new .

Oo.

A simple exhaust system change can have a dramatic effect on your noise level, plenty of posts here about them , do a search!!

My 95 had a nice sound to it, especially moving along at about 1800 rpm at 70 mph. Just a sweet purr that could put you to sleep if you weren't careful.

I have grown up with diesels and I like the sound they make.

Thats one of the main reasons i got rid of my 01 to noisey having to shut it off when i wanted to talk to anyone outside. Also it has alot more power chipped or not.

Yep, the quiet was the main reason we traded our low mileage '00... along with more power, steering, brakes, four real doors, more room, good looks inside and out, etc.

We've owned a first gen, two second gens, which were good trucks, but the 3rd gen beats then all... a real pleasure to drive! :D

My 01. 5 sounded awesome, and everytime I hear a 2nd gen truck, I get almost teary-eyed. I miss my old truck. My wife even missed the sound. I guess it helped her hear me coming from a couple of blocks away.

The night I got it, we had company over, and she wanted me to get home. She called me on my cell, and asked when I would be home. I said, "I'm in the driveway," just as I was pulling in. She said, "whatever. Just hurry up and get home!" A few seconds later I saw her and the kids stick their heads out the front door with puzzled looks on their faces. It was in February, at night, during a mild snow storm, and it took them a couple of seconds to see the black dually in the driveway wasn't my Dark Garnet Red SRW :D

She says, "I don't like it. It's too quiet. " She really liked the old one with the silencer ring removed. She loves hearing the spool-up and the roar thru the 4" exhaust. She's a good woman!! ;)

Sometimes;

- I like the quiet when I leave for work in the morning; If I'm late getting home; and going through drive-thru's, BUT I do sometimes miss the noise from my '01. I'm thinking that an exhaust change may give me the best of both worlds: quiet at idle, and a "big rig" exhaust note with some throttle.

Not ever owning a Cummins before, the only experience I can refer to is hearing other drivers firing up their diesels in the early mornings while I'm trying to quiet the knocking in my head (alcohol induced), on my recent trip I became aquainted with several other 04. 5 owners with later build dates, I was surprised how much quieter their trucks were than mine, some actually sounded like kittens purring, mine clatters like an old caterpillar on pavement, I wonder?? was there a change to make the newer ones quieter? can programming change the sound without affecting performance? what whine when the turbo spools up? I don't hear anything! is it my truck or my hearing aids??

I have another idea for a poll, one dealing with the ages of those that have bought the new Dodge/Cummins 600. Or a poll dealing with the sound tolerance of those said people? Dang, I waited ten years to be able to buy me a new Dodge with the Cummin's and when I am finally able too, what do I get? Some ol'fart/soccer mom's idea of what a diesel truck should sound like. A quiet, unobtrusive, mini-van sounding truck, that smells like a Clark fork lift. My old worn out MTD lawn mower is louder and sounds better.

And I'm sure the purists do not want to know how poor my new Dodge sounds like compared to my old '97 PSD. :-{} :D :-laf

I've got an '01 and an '03. The old one sounds a lot more like a real truck, in my opinion. Put a Magnaflow, 24" muffler on the new one. Still doesn't sound "throaty" like an older diesel. Sounds more like a "sports car". Doesn't sound like a diesel truck. Installed an AFE Proguard-7 system with a Torque Tube and removed the silencer ring. You really can hear the turbo sing, now. Must sound like an F-16 coming down the road. Pedestrians walking down the road will sometimes turn around to see what's coming their way. It's almost too loud. This new truck is kind of like having a Harley-Davidson with quiet mufflers. It's lost some of it's personality. My friends, with Duramaxes, think I'm nuts! Joe.

Waa'l sonny boy, I guess y'all got me right, jest another old fart that aint got the cohones to go any faster than a mule can trot, yeahh, I know you like your boom boxes and other noise makers, I been thar an done that already, now after 70 yars of loud machinery an roarin unmuffled engines my doc's say I'll never have more than 50% hearing at best and will probably be total deef fore long, did I enjoy those rides on noisy motorbikes, you bet I did!!

knowing what I know today, would I do it over again? never, never, never. . when you can't hear what your sweetie just shouted in your ear, you begin to understand the price you pay for your reckless youth, your world suddenly gets a lot smaller, Yep, what I am today, you will soon be, the way your goin now, keep it up, my daughter is an audiologist and she needs the business. :D

Hey, I resemble that remark. :D The Ol' fart part, not the boom box, noise maker part. I may only be, man I hate to admit it, 40 but after listening to my kids, I guess I am getting to be "An Ol' Fart" myself. :{ :D

I guess my point is every one makes comments about or complains about the noise of the new Cummins 600 engines. Which in my opinion, is actually a really quiet, decent sounding diesel engine. But it doesn't sound like a Cummins, which was one of the reasons why I chose the Dodge over the Ford.

And no fears on my part in having to make a visit to your daughter the audiologist, I have worn hearing protection most of my life and still do. And according to the hearing tests I have to take yearly, I can chose to hear what I want, when I want. :-laf

Mine was too quite at first. Now with the addition of a a straight through muff and a less restritive whisling turbo it's just about right. Still love to hear the ol' 12 valves and think back but it's nice to order your fast food without sutting your truck off.

IMHO the decibel level is just about right, in a few years I might want a little more noise so's I can hear the engine runnin, don't want to do like that old fart a couple years ago down in So. Cal. that forgot his enjine was still running when he let the clutch out. :-laf

WMcGuire,

Don't forget. The older you get, the harder it is to hear the higher pitched sounds. So the issue about turbo whine is mute, I think we need to worry more about engine noise and maybe the exhaust note.

As a younger Ol' fart to a slightly older Ol' fart. :D :-laf

And remember, it's all good. :-laf :-laf

I generally like the volume of my '01, however, my wife heard the silence of an '04 as it passed us by while outside in the yard... now she's hot on my tail to trade up my current rig for an '05... . so I guess I'll have to say I'm glad they quieted it down, eh?

Brand new rig with wifes [aggressive] approval? Ho yeah.

I bombed my 04. 5 to get a little noise out of the engine. I put the Airdog system on this weekend and now the engine doesn't sound as loud or rattle as much. I can still hear the whine of the turbo which is good thing.
